Using Synology Surveillance Station / Java problem

I had this same problem with my brand-new Synology DiskStation 1813+. I fought it for days, researching obscure Java error messages and trying to get the Java installation right. Then I discovered a simple solution that worked for me. I closed Safari and opened Firefox. I hadn't used Firefox for quite some time, so version 7 opened, and Live View on Surveillance Station worked flawlessly. While I was testing it, Firefox updated first to version 12, then to version 25. All three worked without a hitch.

Unfortunately, Firefox does not correct (for me) the Java errors in File Station. Maybe I should try Chrome??? :-)

Thanks for the update. I've only connected one of my cameras so far (haven't paid the exorbitant license fee for more). I guess one at a time beats none, but just barely.

It's a shame Synology's programs are so lame. I'm starting to wish I had bought the Drobo and saved a few hundred dollars and a lot of frustration.

I agree that I like the basic box, but had I known of their lack of support for access with a Mac and Safari, I might have gone a different way. I don't like their applications enough to buy a Windows box or turn my Mac into a Windows box to make them work. It can't be all that hard, because Plex on the DiskStation runs almost flawlessly, accessing it using a Web interface on my Mac with Safari, with no Java errors and no security violations. I haven't tried the cloud feature yet, but that's a discussion for another thread.

Nope it doesnt work for me and I am having the same issue as everyone else here - Do these sudo commands need to be entered whilst in a certain directory or root or will the 'macname$' directory be sufficient ?

Liveview works like a charm with Oracle's Java (you will have to install it from Java.com)

Well, I for one am really hesitant to start tacking an obsolete & unsecure version of Java into a brand new machine with Mavericks 10.9.x & Java 7 Update 51.

One of the first things I tried is FireFox 28, but no dice. FireFox gives me a black window with some arrow controls and a red message on top that:

How many more months do we need to wait after compatibility with Mavericks? JAVA7? FireFox 2x?

Now, jumping on an x year old system with OS X 10.6.8 with Safari 5.1, tap into the DS via the browser, click SS, Safari requests permission for some applet. OK. Boom. Full viewport window with a control panel column on the left, big live preview on the right.

At least I can see my new DS Compatible camera works!

Clarification to avoid another personal attack.

I have a batch of new equipment, updated software and new cameras. And, I have the problem with Synology Surveillance Station 6 on a brand new system with Mavericks + Safari 7 + Java 7.

SS does not work in FireFox Chrome Opera either. I may get a little farther but I am getting some other errors and no video, advanced settings, ...

Yes, I do question whether it is wise and safe to install JAVA 6. I'm no expert, but things seemed pretty clear last year about removing old instances of JAVA.

On the positive side of things, I was able to completely use, configure, setup and test a camera with Surveillance Station 6 by using a system that is several years old. Since then I have been able to use DS CAM on the iPad & iPhone to use live view and review recordings.

This may seem off topic, pointless, etc. but if you have access to one and can use a mobile device; it may be an option for another user; where he/she dusts off an old system (grab the system you handed down to the kids, loans a parent's older laptop ...) to do what they need to do, to get it all set up in management, motion, etc. Without having to possibly / likely (?) compromize a new computer or run into other compatibility issues by installing obsoleted software.

I am still digging a little deeper with regards to JAVA 6 vs 7 settings, authorizations, etc.

I am waiting to hear back from Synology. I have opened two support tickets with them on this compatibility issue and another related SS matter. The shared solution works / may work; but should not be required. Syno needs to step up to the plate and get SS 6.2 out the door. I'm sure they were made aware of the issue back when it first came up. Months have passed. Maybe they forgot. Maybe it is scheduled for the future. Time to remind them.

Hello. I asked the following question on a separate post that I started without first doing a thorough check for previous similar topics. My apologies. I'd apppreciate hearing from anyone who can help me understand the risks of installing Java 6 on Mavericks, with the proviso of blocking all url's except the few that I directly control.

Here's my question from the other thread:

I have a new IP camera that I want to control via a Synology NAS app called Surveillance Station but unfortunately this app currently requires Java 6. I also have Axis IP cameras that require Java 6 or 7 in order to set various motion detection parameters. For this latter task I use Java 7 installed on OSX 10.9.2 and Safari 7.0..3. I tightly restricted Java access to only these few IP camera URLs that are known to me and under my direct control. However, to use Surveillance Station means I would need to uninstall Oracle's Java 7 and install Apple's Java 6. My question is what is the risk of running Java 6 if access is restricted to only the URLs associate with these IP cameras?

Synology responded that they are working on a standalone native app for the mac platform. No ETA.

I guess they're following what QNAP did? (not impressed by the demo of their app)
