Using Synology Surveillance Station / Java problem

Hi,

I am using a synology surveillance station and I can't get the live view to work. I always get the answer that I have to install Java.

If I install the latest Java version from the apple site the surveillance station just pretends that it is not installed and gives me the link to the apple suport page to redownload the latest Java version. When I check this in terminal I get this:

java version "1.6.0_65"

Java (TM) SE Runtime Enviroment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-11M4609)

Java HotSpot (TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-b462, mixed mode)

So it seems that java is actually running. What could be the problem?

If I install the latest Version from the Java web site I get a little further. If I try the live view it asks me a couple of question to allow the usage. I accept everything and then it just seems to load forever and I have to close the window.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the heads-up re Synology's plan to release a stand-alone app at some point in the distant future. I'd appreciate one little bit of extra advise:

If I de-install Java 7 and install Java 6 on Mavericks and specifically limit access to just known url's and block access all other sites is this opening up my machine to risk of hacking?

muximus,

I think you are correct. I think that if one limits Java 6 to LAN access of the Synology, one should be fine. Plus I think the very last Java 6 version plugged similar holes as found in 7. Again, I think if you button down JAVA to the max and only authorize the DS, then one should be fine; as the security issue hinges on visiting a website (directly or through social engineering, spam,...) that was infected with malicious code.

I don't know how the browsers deal with the browser plugin for 6 vs 7 though. The thing is, technically you can run JAVA 6 & 7 side by side, and should be able to run 6 for Synology and 7 for the rest; but I've read somewhere that browsers default to using 6 for everything. And, what I'm not in the mood for is being my own guinea pig and getting nagged constantly by browsers or other updates that my Java is out of date or somehow screw up my system. I'm fresh off a hosed system with the 10.9.2 update, I'd like to keep it running for a while.

Note, that I'm not a security expert nor JAVA expert 🙂

Everything works fine with Google Chrome.

I just wonder why these SW guys at Apple keep on changing things that work perfectly fine just for change sake.

When I want to look at the video in my surveilance folder, everything worked fine in 10.8 with QuickLook (using Perian). Now it doesn't work any more.

Why Apple, why do you change things that work fine into something with reduced funtionality that works sometimes ?
