Mavericks Safari 7 is badly broken - Help!

Since updating to Mavericks the version of Safari installed, 7.0 (9537.71), is behaving absolutely terribly.

Preferences menu will not load unless selected several times.

Page loading is crawling.

Some pages where I manually type the url will not load at all.

Back/Forward buttons do not work.

Open link in new tab doesn't work.

Open link in new window doesn't work.

Extensions downloaded do not appear in the Extensions pref page (though the components are in the requisite folder).

Numerous crashes and non-response glitches.

This very, very buggy version of Safari has made this update of OS X the worst I've ever experienced.

Is there a way of doing a clean install of Safari 7 or the entire Mavericks update from Mountain Lion 10.8.5?

Thanks for any help/suggestions/advice.

Hopefully found my fix, too.

Experienced similar problems: since Mavericks update, Safari would often (but not always) fail to load common sites like google.com, espn.com, etc. The blue progress bar in the address bar would just stop shortly after starting, and never progress. Same sites load quickly on my iPad, so both the sites and my connection seemed fine.

My ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins had four plug-ins, from WebEx, Citrix, and Evernote. Removing these files to the desktop and restarting Safari seems to have cured the problem.

I've tried just about everything in this thread, including reinstalling Mavericks. No help. I've wasted a LOT of time on this issue.

I give up. I've changed over to Chrome -- imported all my bookmarks and open pages (the ones Safari could still remember...) and have been rebuilding my browsing life.

Buh-bye, Safari. It was nice knowing you... some of the time, anyway.

Spoke to soon . . . after awaking from sleep overnight, Safari page loading hangs again. Restarting the Mac has given me web access again, but seems that will be temporary.

Re Chrome: when Safari wouldn't load, I got the same non-result on Chrome, while my iPad and other non-Mavericks Macs loaded pages from the same network and access with no problem. Found it funny when Chrome gave me a "The webpage is not available" message for www.google.com! Not so funny, anymore.

Makes me think this might be a larger Mavericks issue, maybe not Safari specific. Have disconnected all FW & USB peripherals (except the keyboard and Magic TrackPad), and logged in with a guest account - same load fail occurs. Then afer what seems to be a random number of restarts, it works for awhile.

Agree the time suck is frustrating . . .

Does anyone from Apple actually monitor these pages? If they don't, one would get the impression they could give a rat's azz about this because if it were a huge problem for a huge number of people they would have fixed it already, but seeing as they haven't too bad for those it affects !

I had the same problems after I upgraded flash, when I unistalled flash all was well, I reinstalled flash the problem came back. I did that about 5 times when I gave my head a shake and said screw flash I can live without it. No problems ever since...

OK, I just installed the new OS X update (10.9.1) which includes a Safari update (7.0.1). As soon as the 'puter was restarted, I fired up Safari -- and it seems to be working much better. Here is the apple support page on the update:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6065

And here is what it says about Safari:

Includes Safari 7.0.1

  • Fixes an issue that could cause Safari to become unresponsive when filling out forms on fedex.com, stubhub.com, and other websites
  • Improves Credit Card Autofill compatibility with websites
  • Improves VoiceOver compatibility with facebook.com
  • Updates Shared Links periodically when open in the Safari Sidebar

So far, it seems to be OK -- but has anyone else had a different experience? The bulleted list re: Safari makes no mention of the issues described in this and many other threads...

I'm going to post this in a couple of other threads on this issue... sorry for the spamming...

I have done a little toying around. I have found that viewing a Wordpress page locks up Safari. Not every Wordpress page -- for example, this page gives me no trouble:

http://en.wordpress.com/features/

But as soon as I load this one, everything hangs. Persistent beachball...

It may be the falling snowflakes... I just don't know...

In any case, it may provide a hint to someone more knowledgable than I am as to what the underlying problem is and what might be done about it.
