Anyone else having endless Finder crashes in Mavericks?

I apparently installed Mavericks successfully on my early-2008 Core2Duo MacBook Pro. But as soon as I log in, the Finder goes into an endless loop of crashing. The crash report mentions something about an external process or access being the cause, if I recall correctly. But then it just lists a long line of system files and processes.

I removed all of my login items, but the crashes continue. The only way to get the Finder to function is to boot up in Safe Mode. I did that, in order to run all the available updates, but that did not cure the endless Finder crashes. Even reinstalled Mavericks -- waste of time.

I have used every version of OS X starting from 10.0, and this is the very first time I have been unable to get a new version running.

Anyone know a fix? I'm ready to erase my boot drive and copy over my Mountain Lion backup from its external drive.

I had this same problem. I don't use Google Drive, but I used to use Dolly Drive. Removing the DollySpaceTools folder did the trick.

Startupdiskname/Library/Application Support/DollySpaceTools

(This was driving me nuts!)

BTW, Dolly Drive has a note on their support page that says they have an update that is Mavericks compatible. I did not have that update installed when I installed Mavericks.

About a week after installing Mavericks on my Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon... it started playing up. Firstly the dock couldn't be opened then, it dissapeared along with all my desktop folders and icons! Most of the Finder menu dropdowns worked but nothing happened if you selected anything apart from 'New Folder'... which I couldn't open!

I could not boot up in safe mode... it would get to about 25% on the progress bar then crash and restart. Most apps seemed to be unaffected but I couldn't gain access to any of my files and folders. The menu bar started to pixelate and then dissapeared. Sometimes I'd get the menu bar and desktop icons, then they'd dissapear again.

I didn't have Google Drive installed so after reading all the relevant posts, this is what I did:

I had a spare internal drive on which I installed a fresh copy of Mavericks. Everything appeared stable so the first step was to drag all my docs, pics and music (including iTunes) across so everything I needed was safe. This was required because just to make matters worse, my encrypted Time Machine external b/u drive had decided to no longer accept the password... I kid you not! (No I did not forget it I always use the same one)!

I then needed to access my user account Library on the main drive... which as you know is hidden. To do this you need to open a search window to search 'This Mac'. Select 'Other' from the 'Kind' menu dropdown. Click 'System Files....' in the Search Attribute window that opens, then change 'aren't included' to 'are included' in the 2nd menu dropdown. Search for 'Library'... make sure you have the bottom window menu bar visible in order to see the file paths because you'll get about a dozen Libraries show up in the results. Your hidden user Library will be there somewhere.

I then deleted files as follows: (~/Library = hidden user Library.... /Library = System Library)

1) Deleted files ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.finder.savedState

2) Deleted all files in ~/Library/LaunchItems, ~/Library/StartupItems, /Library/LaunchItems and /Library/LaunchDaemons folders

3) Deleted all files in Library/LaunchAgents, Library/LaunchDaemons and Library/StartupItems folders

I don't know if any one individual item or all of them stopped the Finder crash loop? However, after rebooting although all my icons were still missing I noticed I could not only create a new window, I could open it... so the Finder had not crashed? You'll love this bit... I had my TV plugged in to the Mac's secondary display port but it wasn't visible so I opened 'Diplays' in System Prefs and hit 'Mirror Diplays'... hey presto, all my folders and drive icons re-appeared! For some reason Mavericks had decided to shift them all over to the second display's desktop which is weird because... creating a new folder put it where it should be on the main desktop?

Anyway... everything has been stable and working as it should for 3-days now at point of writing. The new encrypted Time Machine back-up is complete and is accepting the password. £90's worth of previous Time Machine Western Digital drive has been diss-assembled, sand blasted and now resides down the local tip where it belongs.

Fingers remain crossed... shame I can't charge Apple for all this unnecassary work?

Yes I do know that... if you read the post I needed to access the user library of HD-1 which had the problem. I could not use any menu functions on HD-1 as a result of the Finder crash loop apart from creating a new folder which could then not be opened. If I'd used the Go menu having started up on HD-2 it would have given me the user library on that drive and not the one I needed to access on HD-1!

Lone Arrow: You are my hero. I did a little trial and error and found that deleting /Library/Launch*/* resolved the finder crash problem on not one, but two different systems. The first was a Mavericks updated MacBook, the second was a brand new Mac Mini that I used the Migration Assistant to move data from a 7-year-old iMac with Mountain Lion installed. You just saved me two trips to the Genius Bar. I owe owe you a beer.

Hmm

just got stuck in the same infinite loop after installing FreeMind and the latest version of Java - Safari hung then my Macbook would not shutdown and then got stuck in finder on reboot multiple times.

Fortunately I had set up a second admin account on the same machine so I was able to boot to that and confirm that it was an account start up problem and not an underlying OS issue.

Rebooting back to the problem account and the issue had now cleared itself.....

Confusing........

I was having the same problem. I fixed it by going opening the System Preferences app. Went into Users and Groups. Clicked on the Login Items tab for my account. Then I removed (clidked on the applicatoin name and then click the minus button at the bottom) any applicatoins that might possibly interact with Finder on startup. For me, this included Dropbox, Hazel, and Transporter. Then I restarted and the problem was gone.
