How to get a pdf in iBooks onto my iPhone?

I have successfully copied a pdf into iBooks on my Mac running Mavericks. I have enabled syncing in iBooks on both Mac and iPhone, but the pdf has not so far synced to my 'phone. I can't get it into iTunes, where books still sync to my 'phone. Please advise!

When I select Sync Books it tells me that all music, videos, etc will be erased from my iPhone. I figured I would try it. It allowed me to select the books to sync. I then check the other pages to unselect sync on them for music etc but it wont let me manually add music if any of the sync options are selected. Is this the same for you?

Strangly I've been able to do that since mavericks was released. Problem I'm having though is in the same area. I can see all my books, comics, and pdfs under that section but the only way I can get them onto my iPhone is to select Sync Books at the top and then select Selected Books as the option and choose my books or pdfs etc. Its when I select Sync Books that the issue comes up, I get the following message.

Are you sure you want to remove existing music, movies, TV shows, books and tones form this iPhone and sync with this iTunes Library? Options are Cancel or Remove and Sync.

I manually manage my music and additional contect on my iPhone and don't randomly select music from my library. If I choose Remove and Sync it erases my music from my phone and removes the manually manage music option, but it also DOESN'T select sync music or any other sync options on the other sections. I can choose to do the syncs but it takes a lot longer and has less options of picking and choosing music then just doing it manually. If I select manage music manually again it removes the sync option from the books area.

Even more upsetting is if I sync the books and remove everything else from the phone then select manually update music and it removes the sync it leaves the books on the phone. I'm finding this lack of intagration between operating systems and programs very frustrating. It wasn't broken before and they add a nice feature with iBooks for Mavericks and they break what worked.

I spoke with technical support and they said there wasn't an issue you can email yourself your pdfs and save them to ibooks one by one and you can download books etc from that you purchased from the store again on your phone. Personally I prefer to save my music, videos, books, etc to a external hard drive so I have it when I want it and I don't need to worry about it disappearing from iTunes or the iBooks store.

If you find away to get books and pdfs on your iPhone that isn't a massive hassle let me know. I still don't understand why when you plug your iOS device in that iBooks doesn't open just like iPhoto does. You'd think you could just sync that way.

Xodiak,

I have searched through settings both on my Mac and on my iPhone and I cannot replicate that. If the quantity of books, comics and pdfs is too great for the available space might that be the problem? Otherwise it sounds like some sort of syncing problem where a new sync wipes previous content. Personally, I can now sync books and pdfs in the way I originally expected to - on my Mac through iBooks and then the iTunes Books heading with the 'phone connected. I hope Tech Support or others can come up with more ideas and a better solution for you!

From APPLE:

"About using iBooks with iCloud

Your books, collections, highlights, notes, and bookmarks are available automatically on your computers and iOS devices—just use the same Apple ID to sign in to the iBooks Store."

So anything in the "collections" should be available automatically on your computers and iOS devices—as long as you use the same Apple ID to sign in to the iBooks Store. BUT THAT IS NOT THE CASE, so there IS a problem!

iTunes Version 11.1.3 downloaded and installed a couple of days ago solved this for me, but the problem remains that if you sync a pdf from your device, you cannot delete it from the iTunes Books heading on your Mac when the device is connected. You can delete it from iBooks. You can untick it, but it seems to remain resolutely available in the iTunes Books heading!

UPDATE COMING SOON FOR iBooks

From 9to5Mac

Apple is readying a slew of performance and bug fix updates for several other OS X Mavericks applications. According to the updates seeded today to Apple employees, Apple is preparing updates for iBooks, Safari, and the Remote Desktop Client apps:

For iBooks, Apple says that the new version (1.0.1) “includes bug fixes and improvements to performance and stability.”

Apple has seeded two software upgrades for OS X Mavericks internally, according to a source with knowledge of the upcoming updates. This person says that the updates are labeled as OS X 10.9.1 and OS X 10.9.2. The first update is expected to be released later this month, and it will serve as an update to squash bugs that accompanied the OS X 10.9.0 release of Mavericks last month. Many users have complained about issues relating to the Mail and iBooks applications, and Apple is preparing to release individual bug-fix updates for those apps in the coming days.
