Can't send mail after mavericks upgrade

MacPro user (mid2010)

I am using a third party email address and am currently with O2 Broadband. Since upgrading to Mavericks, I am unable to send emails using the Mail app.

My outgoing mail server is: relay.o2broadband.co.uk

And I'm using the default ports.

I am aware that O2 Broadband customers are being moved over to Sky but my account is still with O2 right now.

I can send mail just fine on my Laptop which is still running OSX 10.7 so I'm fairly convinced this issue has something to do with Mavericks.

Anyone else suffering the same issues? I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

Same problem here.. I use Apple Mail for my Gmail and I do receive all incoming mails, but can't send any mails. Mail gives an errormessage which talking about "authentication required".

Message is in Dutch but the response is in English..

It seems to be a problem with the Google SMTP server. I just used a different SMTP server for my GMail, the smtp server of XS4ALL (dutch Telecom Provider) and now it works just fine and sends the mail with no problem.

In the early years you can only used the smtp of your TP at home, but i just heared i can use the XS4ALL SMTP anywhere i want.

So I found a work-around this way, but it still ***** the GMail SMTP gives so much problems.

Though I don't know what SMTP means, I think it must be a problem with the SMTP servers, from what I am reading. I have two Gmail accounts – one through my university, and one Google. After some work, I managed to get the university Gmail to kind of work. When I first opened mail it syncs with the server, syncing all folders and files with that university account. I can also mail out of that account. However, after the initial contact of the server, the account will no longer download emails, worsening folders of emails that have changed on the server. To download new emails, or to sync folders with the server, I must quit Mail, and relaunch. As for the Gmail account (non-university) nothing will make it work. I have tried every fix that I have read online, I have tried every combination of SMTP server and porch that I can see, I have tried every permutation of my email address — with@gmail.com and without — and nothing will work. It is simply dead in the water.

Interestingly enough, on my iOS devices all of my accounts work fine in without any problem. Perhaps OS X needs to become even more like iOS?

yes to all SMTP servers (no Gmail)

what I was obliged to do is this: the SMTP server from the university where I reside accept connections without a password from IP addresses inside the local network. So getting rid of the password thus enables me to send mail. But If I connect outside this network I am %@&#!!!

So it is an authentification snag.

(connecting to mail from the console through telnet did work!)

Disable SSL is not a solution. I have SSL enabled because i want my SMTP secured. I will not disable it.

I think one of the solution for the moment is to install a local SMTP server on your mac (or VM) and access it by 127.0.0.1, without security...

Edit: I fixed some SMTP connections by deleting all servers and the Mail.app preferences, then by reconfiguring them. It's now OK for all my GMail, but not for my own SMTP.

I have all the above problems and tried every possible fix since upgrading to Mavericks, my emails will not send as SMTP server shows 'offline' but ONLY through WIFI. However, it works perfectly if I connect the ethernet cable. All my iphones, ipad etc work perfectly but both mac mini's have exactly the same problem since the upgrade. I have wasted days on trying to fix it and have given up until Apple come up with a solution. Not happy!!

I've given up with Apple Mail and am using Airmail until this is fixed.

One interesting point: Airmail wouldn't allow me to use an alias address (possibly to disalow spamming, although mine was benign) and crashed the program which I had to reinstall. On the offchance that Apple was using the same policy, I closed the alias account and reinstalled Mavericks (for the 3rd time!) But still no result.

I'm completely mystified and not very happy as now I have systems which conflict so that I'm much worse off with Mavericks and can't share new iWorks doc's with 10.8 users.
