Why No Quick Look with MP4 in Mavericks?

Since upgrading to Mavericks, many movie or video types no longer are available through Quick Look - and must be converted to play through Quicktime. The convertion can take a awfully long time, depending on the movie size.

Why is that - because they worked fine with Mountain Lion.

The most noticeable examples are .MP4's

Just wanted to chime in as saying that unfortunately, none of the solutions offered here have helped me. I've checked the m4v files and they contain no "hint track" (and neither do the mkv files from which they were created); installing the extra codecs has gotten me nowhere.

QuickLook shows only the file's first frame. The file works just fine when opened in QuickTime, no further conversion efforts required.

Hi.

WIth a lot of consideration and thought, I updated to Mavericks... Its been my experience that any update might fix some issues but it often creates many others. The block, I call it, to be able to view mp4 movies in Mavericks is a real pain and shame on Apple for causing unnessary issues without a fix for all users and supporters of Apple. This thread in all honestly, should not have had to have been started.. There should not have been an issue in the first place...

I have Final Cut Pro, and I ownloaded the ProApps but.. This is what I get.. Doest that mean my version of FC is out of date or somthing..

Something that I have taken for granted for so long is now a big issue.. I cannot put QT movies in my files since many users of Windows just will not open them.. If this is Apples way of forcing Windows users to use QT, it won't work and it has the opposit effect on users of Apple in my oppinion..

I have chatted to a very helpful guy at Apple. It sees it is as nothing to do with Mavericks. It’s a total waist of time trying to download those ProAppsQTCodecs.dmg for software like Final Cut Studio or any version since it’s apparently nothing to do with it. The issue is perhaps Adobe or any other software used to embed a mp4 in a html page.. If you view the mp4 without embedding into an html page, it will default to QT but you can use player like VLC. Mavericks are very new so other software mobs have to catch up. My project has come to a sudden halt since I cannot view the mp4 movie in my html file. It does not even default to QT… Now that I have installed Mavericks, I cannot even embed a QT into a html file using Dreamweaver.. So it might be Dreamweaver. Therefore all this might be an Adobe issue and not Apple..

Hi, my name is John, Destiny's husband..

Just to advise you that we are in contact with Apple regarding this complicated issue.. It might well be a plug-in bug or what I suggest is a QT plug-in that is not compatible with Mavericks or Safari.. We have done a total reinstall of Mavericks after some tweaking.. Sorry to say that that effort did not fix this issue.. I have advised Apple accordingly. Apples support in this issue has been very good.. I am sure a fix will be found soon..

If you were trying to view your mp4 using Safari, I suggest you try another brewers.. The mp4 will open using Opera but we do not have any other browsers on our Mac but what I suggest you do is try other browsers if you have them installed and advice this Thread if they work or not..

Thank you

Your version of Final Cut may not be out of date, the installer is looking for a particular version of the application and is unable to find it on your computer, if anything the installer is the application at fault here. The ProApps installer is not properly identifying what version of Final Cut you have installed.

If you have a backup of your computer I suggest the following...

  1. Confirm your system backup is recent.
  2. Move your Final Cut application to the trash.
  3. Open your 'System/Quicktime/' folder and copy all of the Quicktime Plug-in components to a Desktop folder.
  4. Delete the contents of the Quicktime folder.
  5. Compress the copies in the Desktop folder into an Archive file, delete the uncompressed versions.
  6. Log into the App Store, locate Final Cut. It should indicate you can install the application.
  7. Allow the application to install, it is over 2GBs so it will take time. You can monitor it on the App Store Purchases page.
  8. After it is installed activate the Software Updates from the Apple menu, if any additional content is left to download it should recognize what is needed and proceed.
  9. Restart the computer.
  10. Open up the 'System/Quicktime/' folder, you should have all of the updated ProApps components listed that are compatible with Mavericks.
  11. If you have third party components needed for special circumstances then I recommend accessing the appropriate website to download the latest versions.
  12. If an update is not available you can unarchive the compressed versions performed earlier and drag the appropriate plug-in to the 'System/Quicktime/' folder. If for any reason it indicates a version of the file already exists then proceed with caution, it is likely a change was initiated on the new file to make it Mavericks compatible.

I've done this on three systems I have and it hasn't made a difference with QuickLook. This is a deeper, system related issue in my opinion. If it is important to you to have this level of functionality then keep calling Apple and letting them know this functionality needs to be restored. Final Cut Pro X suffered a similar regression in functionality and it was only after the user base complained that Apple started to add the missing features.

You might need to go back & look at the posts that discuss 'AVFoundation'.

Adding Quicktime 7 plugins won't alter AVFoundation, which is the framework the OS uses for the Finder, Quicklook & Quicktime X.

Many older codecs are 32bit, AVFoundation doesn't support them so neither does the Finder or Quicklook… Quicktime X will try to convert where possible.

Thanks for the info about 'AV Foundation', I was aware of that. I've gone through hundreds of Google searches trying to fix the QuickLook problem, my troubleshooting of Final Cut was one of many 'fixes' attempted in my quest to fix the issue. I offered the ProApps installer suggestion to Destiny and John so they could get a matched set of plug-ins for their problem.

The decision by Apple to abandon QuickTime in favor of AV Foundation is premature in my opinion, I'd rather have waited for a more robust implementation of AV Foundation if possible. Is it arrogance or indifference by Apple to think they own the video market and can force change on their userbase? I still have many customers that will accept nothing but uncompressed AVI files. Compressor has taken a performance and stability hit as well with Mavericks.

I could always regress my computers to Lion or Mountain Lion but that just delays the inevitable. I suppose next time Apple offers a free OS upgrade I should install it on an external drive and test it thouroughly before installing it on a work computer. I was lured into a false sense of 'oneness' that was promised by having my systems all on the same OS for once.

Hi everyone..

I think we have worked it out why the mp4 movies will not work.. Its a New Safari Security Protocol.. You can view the mp4 when uploaded.. I am doing some beta testing for a new version of software, and that too will not work locally.. It seems that the new version of Safari has a new security protocol.. Same with other browsers like Chrome and IE I would expect as well as Firefox.. The only one that works locally for me is Opera which I don't like but I might have to use just to test my mp4's locally.. I have informed Apple about my theory.. I am sure I am right.. There is nothing you can do about it, unless you have a local server.. That might work..

Happy New Year 🙂
