Three finger swipe no longer works on Mavericks

I have just updated to Mavericks.

Prior to installing Mavericks, I was able to do a 3 finger swipe left or right to go back or forward in a Finder window.

After I have installed Mavericks, I can no longer do this. I have checked in System Preferences/Trackpad and the settings are exactly as they were before I updated to Mavericks.

I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue and if so have you found of solving it.

I own a Macbook Air 2011. Clean Install of Mavericks. No other programs or peripherals. The finger swipe (forward/Backward) in Finderis not working. Nothing helped. I switched back to 10.8.5 and (praise whatever) anything is ok. The finger swipe is working everywhere. After upgrading to Mavericks (as usual via AppStore) the finger swipe is not working...

So back to Mountain Lion (thanks to the external backup just 9 Min. ago...).

Mavericks not really thrilled me. Unfortunately.

Why is this discussion still going? I posted days ago that the Apple engineers believed the new tab system would suffice to replace the magic 3 finger swipe. Apple know I think that ditching this feature really sucked. No amount of resetting PRAM or whatever you want to wast time on Sys Prefs, short of an upgrade from Apple, you only have one solution: the Better Touch Tool app (free). I downloaded BTT, read the notes, looked at the YouTube tutorial and hey presto, Finder swipes is back. If you get BTT then set it to open on startup and then your back to how it worked under MLion.

Wow, someone has a VERY high opinion of themselves. Have you been on discussion boards previously? The longer the thread, the more useless it becomes.

Well folks, our "betters" have spoken. They now demand that we all just STFU.

If you don't like what they have done, it's recommended you go use something less, and again just STFU. Hey it's Apple, and BillyBoyBiss; they've decided, and we're just cogs in the system of the profit machine. Clearly we are all too stupid, or blind, and are in desperate need of retraining.

They know best, just STFU, and do as you are told.

Ahh yes, just like being in a gulag, or Soviet Bureacracy. March in lock-step children, Big Brother is watching!

Concidering 3 fingers swipe in Finder: I'm actually a newcomer to Mac at all, didn't get all benefits from exploiting all available options of its environment, and now trying to figure the whole subject out, so could you be so kind to reveal me in detail (attaching video if possible would be appreciated greatly) what the action used to look like exactly? Was it swiping between files and if yes did it adress a full-screen mode or what? Now experimenting with BetterTouchTool, however, don't see any difference or just can't make proper use of it yet. Waiting impatiently for you replies, thank you.

Calm down guys! I know you are frustrated - we all are. But let’s keep professional ;-)

We know that Apple changed stuff in Mavericks. billyboybliss even suggests it was intentional. Although I know Apple somewhat hates the filesystem and wants to get rid of it, I have no clue why they would remove these swipe gestures. Many users have folders with subfolders and these gestures were convenient for switching between them. Besides, in other stock apps they are still there and removing them because of the newly introduced tabs seems a weird choice too.

Hopefully Apple will change their minds somewhere in the distant future. Until then BetterTouchTool is an alternative, not the most desirable but what can you do.

If any developers are reading this thread who have access to the 10.9.1 beta, it would be cool if you could check if something has changed. THX!

@scrutinizer82

In Finder there are forward and backward buttons in the top left corner. Try opening a folder and clicking on a subfolder. Now if you click the back button you’ll see the previous folder. Clicking forward reverts this. In Mountain Lion and older OS you were able to trigger these same actions with horizontal swipe gestures. Depending on your setting in System Preferences, you had to use either two or three fingers. If you want to see the gesture go to System Preferences > Trackpad > More gestures and point your mouse cursor to „Swipe between pages“, you’ll see the animation on the right.

These gestures worked in normal and in fullscreen mode.

Your first steps are perfectly fine. However, I believe Move Window Right/Left means something else. It's better to use shortcuts. So don't click on "Predefined Action" but click in the input box under "Custom Keyboard Shortcut". Then enter the shortcut.

For English Macs

back: ⌘[
forward: ⌘]

For German Macs

back: Ö
forward: Ä

If you are from a different country open a Finder window and click on Go (in your language) in the menu bar. You'll find the shortcuts on the right next to the first two entries.

These symbols represent keys on your keyboard. For example if you press and [ simultaneously in Finder you can go back. These so called shortcuts are built in by Apple and they do the exact same thing as the back and forward buttons I mentioned above.

Now, the idea is that BetterTouchTool registers your swipe gesture and "presses" these keys for you so that the desired action is triggered.

When you click the box below "Custom Keyboard Shortcut" then BetterTouchTool registers the next keys you press. Since you use ⌘V for pasting these keys are registered. So you have to enter the shortcuts manually. Therefore press for example ⌘[ at the same time and you should be ready to go ;-)

Since you are a new Mac user I want to add that is the Command key which you can find next to the space bar.
