Three finger swipe no longer works on Mavericks

I have just updated to Mavericks.

Prior to installing Mavericks, I was able to do a 3 finger swipe left or right to go back or forward in a Finder window.

After I have installed Mavericks, I can no longer do this. I have checked in System Preferences/Trackpad and the settings are exactly as they were before I updated to Mavericks.

I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue and if so have you found of solving it.

I have the same problem, I CAN'T go back and forth using 3 finger swipe between folders in the finder window. This is really annoying and adds so much time to my workflow. Time is money and this defintely is taking money out of my pocket. It sounds like many people are experiencing this too. Hopefully Apple fixes this bug.

APPLE, PLEASE FIX THREE FINGER SWIPE FUNCTIONALITY IN THE FINDER WINDOW!!!

IT WORKED PERFECTLY IN SNOW LEOPARD, LION, AND MOUTAIN LION.

Certain non-Apple system modifications have been verified to cause this problem in all apps that use trackpad gestures for navigation.

To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:

User uploaded file

Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.

It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.

Copy and paste its output in a reply.

Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.

EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":

  • Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
  • You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
  • Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
  • Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
  • To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

First of all a big thanks to you John for your help in this matter. It is very much appreciated. 🙂

I followed your advice and booted in safe mode, but nothing changed. The gestures don't work in Finder.

Besides, I am not sure whether it is a third party application that causes this trouble since Finder is the only affected app. As you write yourself, a third party application would influence gestures in general, so every app would show this error.

Nevertheless I ran the suggested software and here is the output.

When I make a clean install of OSX, configuring the finder is the first thing I do. Without having installed anything ! And it wasn't working.

+1 This behaviour happens out of the box / with clean installs. I remember the same thing happening in 10.8 and it was fixed in one of the early updates.

Ironic that a system wide gesture is being ignored in *the* central system app.

@zefzfeze downgrading seems extreme. 10.9.1 cannot be far away. If you can live with it a bit longer you might save yourself a considerable amount of frustration.

I have been nagging apple for weeks and a supervisor finally admitted it was a bug that he experiences that only the engineers can fix (sounds like Prometheus is back). Fortunately I didn't upgrade my MBP so the 3 finger swipe backwards and forwards still works in FINDER. I noticed a few people claiming fixes by simple making a few changes in trackpad swipes under Sys Prefs. That's rubbish. That only restores browser swiping, not Finder. An earlier post did mention Better Touch Tools and surprisingly this works. It's free but you'll need to youtube a tutorial to download and set up the good old Mountain Lion 3 finger swipe. If you do get the free app just go into BTT settings and set it to startup on login, otherwise it won't work.
