Installing Mavericks over Mountain Lion

I try to install Mavericks over Mountain Lion but keep getting this message: Unapproved caller, securityagent may only be invoked by Apple software.

Now I am stocked and cannot do anything :-(

Any suggestions?

Well, I was not sure that the problem was the cable ...

But I suspected that the problem was in my HD and then in his ***, because suddenly I could not save anything to disk. Then turn off the machine needed by the power button and turn it on again to return to work. A few days after the problem started, my mac does not recognize anymore the internal disk, only recognize disks connected to the USB port. As had already replaced the HD, I decided to try replacing the cable.

After replacing the cable, did a clean install of Mac OS 10.9 and restored my backup from Time Capsule and everything returned to work perfectly!

Hi everybody,

It's hard to believe that suddenly so many mac users that migrated to Maverick are facing a hardware failure.

All my problems started when I installed the new Mac OS X Maverick: Hard disk becoming radomly unavailable, error messages appearing (unapproved caller agent). I even changed the hard disk because I believed it was out of order. But it doesn't solve the issue. Since I installed Maverick, I keep rebooting the system (in normal, safe or recovery modes) until it finally decides to work. I'm so disapointed with Apple... No official information on this issue that seems to be widely spread. I will need to downgrade back to Lion to see if my MBP works fine again. I will let you know.

I was ironic... I actually don't believe there is a simultaneous hardware failure. It just doesn't make sense.

It is obviously an operating system issue. The fact that the system is suddenly being denied access to critical resources ("SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software") shows that the Security Agent doesn't recognize the OS as an Apple Software.

Why this is happening is the question that needs to be answered.

Thierry,

Here is the ultimate fix and finally got my Macbook Pro working, i went to Apple Store and they did factory install with tools they have. Does not sound very much logical but apparently its working for me. Its been 1 day so far but havent seen issues at all. It has been 63 days since my MBP is up and running for longer than 30 minutes.

I recommend to visit apple store, all Software Warrenty is paid for so they dont charge anything.

Thanks.

Hi everybody,

I made a clean install of Snow Leopard, but I still got the same problem. So finally the hardware issue seemed to be the most probable cause. The fact that this issue is happening almost simultaneously with the upgrade to Mavericks is most certainly a coincidence. I suspected that the optical drive was defective and removed it from my MacBook (I left the cable connected to the motherboard but with no drive connected to it). The Macbook is now working fine and the issue is not happening anymore. I've just migrated to Lion succesfully and will try to migrate again to Mavericks in a week or two, if nothing weird happens until then.

So I believe that linking the "Unapproved caller" issue to the installation of Mavericks might be a wrong diagnostic. The solution needs to be found on the hardware side: cable, drive, etc.

Cheers.

So finally my problem is fixed, Apple "Genius (Moron) Bar" could not figure out whether or not it is software or which part of hardware fault. I paid $300 at Apple store (since my MBP was out of warrenty) and they send it to Apple Remote work site, they changed logic board / battery / HDD. After all 2 visits to Apple store (which is 2 hours away from my locaton) my Macbook is working fine.

So if you guys have tried everything and do not know what to do here is the good option, it costs you but you will get it all working.

I upgraded about 200 computers to 10.9 and this shows up randomly on them after they run hard disk maintenance. I've been trying to debug it and so far I've figured out that if I run this command it fixes it.

rm -r /var/folders/*

You'd have to run it remotely, boot to single user mode, or boot to the recovery partition or other bootable volume. Hope this helps someone else.

I've been trying to figure out what about this folder is causing it to happen on my computers. I've found that I can move it from computer to computer and actually cause the problem to other computers, so I know it's in that folder. Beyond that I don't know. I can't find much information on that folder except that it's per-user caches and temporary files. I'm making a blog post as an attempt to have some info on /var/folders somewhere.
