Cannot update to 3.5 on older MacPro and 3.5 not compatible with 3.4.5

It appears that you cannot update Aperture to 3.5 on older Macs. Worse yet the new update is not compatible with the previous version.

The questions are ---

Is this a temproary issue or a permanent issue?

Can I regress back to version 3.4.5 to get my compatibility back ?

I have multiple computers I use to work on my photography.

I use a older Mac Pro Vintage late 2007 that cannot be updated beyond OS 10.7.5. This is currently my primary photo computer.

With 3ghz Quad cores and over a terabyte of drive space no need to update yet except for not being able to load the latest OS.

I also use a MacBookPro Vintage Late 2011 and it was just updated to Mavericks. I use this to edit my photos on the go.

I will consider updating to the latest Mac Pro when it becomes available but what to do until then and a warning to others.

I'd try the following to downgrade to Aperture 3.4.5, if it is really necessary and the rebuild trick does not work - convert your Aperture library to an iPhoto library by importing it into an empty iPhoto library. iPhoto libraries can be downgraded to earlier versions using the paid version of iPhoto LIbrary Manager: Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto

Afterwards it should be possible to open the downgraded iPhoto library again in Aperture and to use it as an Aperture library.

Ernie,

I'd use this methode only as an emergency method, if all fails.

I only tried with a small Aperture 3.4.5 library, not yet with the newest 3.5. Downgrading from 3.4.5 to 3.3 worked.

Yes, adjustments will be kept, and you even can undo them, but not everything in Aperture will be preserved - for me most important is the lack of support for hierarchical keywords:

From the iPhoto Library Manager support page:

Aperture libraries

Starting with iPhoto 9.3, Apple added support for iPhoto opening libraries created by Aperture, and vice versa. iPhoto Library Manager does support performing copying/merging/rebuilding operations with Aperture libraries, as well as finding and eliminating duplicate photos. However, only those types of items which are directly supported in iPhoto itself can be copied between libraries, and any Aperture-only items are not supported. Unsupported items include:

  • Smart albums, books, and slideshows created in Aperture (these exists in iPhoto, but the Aperture versions are incompatible)
  • Vaults, light tables, web journals, and web pages (these do not exist in iPhoto at all)
  • Keyword hierarchies (all keywords can still be copied, but if they have been nested in Aperture, that nesting will not be restored)
  • Photo stacks
  • Photo labels

To be able to open an Aperture 3.5.1 library in Aperture 3.4.5 I'm following the procedure of "rebuilding" and reprocessing the orginials to be able to use my "antique" MP running Aperture 3.4.5. (quite time consuming for a few thousand images - but very happy to have this solution).

My next challenge is to downgrade from 3.5.1 on Mavericks on my new MBP to 3.4.5 to make it compatible with my MP - any advice on how to accompish that (besides de-installing 3.5 and reinstalling 3.4.5)?

Thanks a ton!

The rebuilding way worked well for me.

Even images imported after "upgrade" were vewable and no reprocessing originals was needed.

The library now seems fine in 3.4.5. I did rebuild on 2011 i5 imac and it was very fast for 7K+ photos.

I guess, there no really a big difference between 3.5.1 and 3.4.5 libraries, the structure looks the same and the

fact that 3.5.1 can be rebiuld into 3.4.5 tells that 3.4.5 knows the library pretty well, where all the things to look for.

Probably all ths versioning thing is just a check somewhere and no real change in the format.

Aperture 3.5.1 doe not seem to have anything 10.9 speciifc, why make libraries incompatible, even if 3.5.1 uses some new APIs from 10.9, is not clear.

Apple, seems, has made all 10.9 release incompatible with previous ones: iwork, iphoto, Aperture.

Like 10.9 is some kind of new begining and everything before it should disapper.

Cannot update to 3.5 on older MacPro and 3.5 not compatible with 3.4.5
