Mavericks Finder keeps crashing!

Since upgrading to Mavericks the finder crashes. Pop up box appears briefly, doesn't not show drives or menu bar. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Please determine if the crashes continue to occur in "Safe Mode":

  • Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
  • Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
  • Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
  • To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Thought it was totally fixed, but did get a bunch of crashes early this morning while showering, but the loop stopped before I noticed and seemed to be fine. So I went in and deleted all files in the Library/LaunchAgents, Library/LaunchDaemons and Library/StartupItems folders.

So far everything seems fine.

Is it safe to remove all those? And do you mean in User Library or System Library?

I am one of those that does not have Google Drive so most of these suggestions are not working for me.

I just had this start happening to me on a Late 2013 15" Retina MBP, the finder wouldn't open new windows or tabs. The only way to open a finder window was from terminal using the "open ." command. I resolved it by going to the /User/Library/Preferences/ directory and removing the com.apple.finder.plist file entirely and then restarting the system. Prior to that I'd tried the disk repair utility, deleting the plist file and relaunching the finder from the force quit menu all to no avail. The delete of the plist file followed by an immediate restart solved the issue.

jdhovland appears to have basically the right solution, at least for those who don't have Google drive installed.

I, too, had completed a hierarchy of alternative solutions without success, but when I removed the plist and rebooted, that seems to have eliminated the problem of hangs. However, he's moving the system plist. I think one only has to move the specific user's plist.

Option+Go to the Library and navigate to the preferences directory ("folder"); drag com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop (for safe keeping) and then restart.

Alternatively, if the Finder is so unstable you can't use it, use Terminal and type

==> mv /User/[USERSHORTNAME]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist /User/[USERSHORTNAME]/Desktop/.

Then restart.

If everything is then O.K., one can discard the (apparently corrupted) plist.

The user will lose special settings associated with the Finder (e.g., customizations for the Finder toolbar). Those will have to be recreated.

Hello,

I had exactly the same problem where I could not use the Finder any more because of multiple crashes. When I look into the crash reports in /Users/YOURNAME/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ where YOURNAME is your user name, I found multiple crash related to a Synology plugin. So I uninstall Synology Cloud Station and everything went back to normal. To do so, I use AppCleaner. It's weird to see that 2 softwares doing the same thing (sharing files in the cloud) managed to crash the Finder in the same way.

Here is part of Finder crash file:

Hi,

I'm using OS X 10.9.5 because some software I use are poorly compatible with the latest os updates. I got the crashing Finder problem too, but Safe Mode seemed to help a lot. Now I'm performing a time machine update with my external HD.

The only question is, do I restar the Macbook pro normally and problem solved? or do I have to change some settings for the mac to start performing normally again?

Thanks!
