Duplicate GarageBand Icon

I have a weird situation as I think Mavericks is still a bit buggy.

I had an old copy of GarageBand on my Mac. It's the old version 6 something.

When I check my app store it never shows that I can update it but the new GarageBand in the store allowed me to download the app for free so I did.

After installation I noticed that both version existing instead of the new one replacing my old. So I dragged the old one into the trash. But for some reason the old icon remained in my LaunchPad and is now associated with my new GarageBand installation. Both old and new icons now point to the new install.

Is there a way to delete the old icon? It appears that the old icon is not retina so it's lower resolution.

Yes, you are absolutley right, whilst tinkering around last night I found the "legacy" section.

Its good to point out, I often resist writing in these supports, because I don't want to muddy the waters with miss information, and alas I should of waited before I was better informed before commenting (a common trait I'm sure)

It was just seeing all the posters trying to delete their duplicate programs.

It was very good to alert them to the necessity to keep GB 6.0.5.

The two versions are so different, and many features of GB 6.0.5 are missing in the new version, that it is really good to keep both versions around, until we know for sure, that we no longer want to fall back on GB 6.0.5. for example for podcast tracks or easy to use presets.

Got worried, after the update of the Garage Band I ended up with two icons, but after a restart I ended up with one icon like I would expect.

Just powered my mac up today and after a restart I now have two icons again, but one is labeled GarageBand 6.0.5.

Glad I am not the only one this happened too.

Odd though, I updated iMovie as well and in the applications folder I have iMovie and iMovie 9.0.9 in its own folder, yet only iMovie in LaunchPad.

I thought I would have both in LaunchPad like Garage Band.

The old versions are kept in cases where the old and new are significantly different. This applies to Garageband, iMovie, and the iWork suite but not iPhoto. Those are the only ones I have experience with.

Note that if you have the old Garageband installed, the lessons offered in the new Garageband can be downloaded for free in the old. They're the same. Likewise all the loops. What I don't seem to get for free is the various drummers in the new Garageband.
