Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Has anyone been able to use the new garage band ?

I'm struggling with almost everything. Bugs, disables features, lost almost all my settings, can't even recreate them, keep dragging tracks to another "space" when you want move something to the end (and it's doing my head in cause you can't disable it). Took me 4 hours for a 45 minute job and it's not done yet.

This new garageband is a shadow of the previous versions. Even the design of is just useless : I can't drag the cursor at the end of the song cause there's a bloody zoom slider just in front of it!!! Who's the genius who's put this feature together?!

So, I mean it, has any been able to do anything with it ? What's your opinion ?

If Apple need feedback, I'm more than happy to give some and I've got loads to say...!

The old version of Garageband should still be in you application folder. Look for a folder named Garageband it will be in there.

I personally like the new Grageband better then the old. Sure something's are missing but it's still new. I can see how the new interface may be cofuesing but spend 15 minutes learning where everything is and it starts making sense.

I just read through this thread and see similar pattern of reaction with other software applications that get a major update.

First of all, I agree that GarageBand X upsets a lot of users becasue it takes away important functionality or changes workflows that won't allow a user to do the work he or she used to do before.

Having said that. A lot of things are posted just out of frustration that things are not there or doesn't work becasue the user didn't take the time to actually learn the program and see that some stuff is still there, just different.

Apple didn't help the situation by calling this a GarageBand upgrade. This is NOT a GarageBand upgrade it is a new Logic Pro light application (with all its consequences). That is the main information that is missing and that caused so much frustration.

Apple should have said. "Here is a new app, it is a light version of Logic that lets you do almost everything that the previous GarageBand could do. Later, it lets you easily upgrade to Logic Pro once you outgrown GarageBand and want to move up. You need some time to learn it. And yes we killed the Podcast feature and limited the way how you can select internal Plugins - Sorry about that. We will implement it later if we get enough feedback (maybe wishfull thinging)".

After all, it is a free upgrade. You can try it and if it is a deal breaker, choose a different app if this doesn't work for you. I know this is painfull becasue it is a similar situation like iWeb where there is not much alternative out there once you got used to the app.

If you decided that you can work with the new GarageBand X, then the next step is to learn the new features, concepts and workflows. For that I wrote the first comprehensive manual "GarageBand X - How it Works". It explains all the details and also compares it to GarageBand 11 to show how stuff works different now.

I also like the GarageBand X better than the old one. I really think that it is easiere for a new user to learn and understand than the old one. Taking away the ability to add internal Plugins, I can understand that to make it simpler with the Smart Controls. Taking away the Podcast feature is a little strange, becasue they could just added that to Logic to maintain feature parity. Maybe there are some "non-technical" issues going on at Apple regarding Podcast support in general.

Hope that helps

I was so upset and thought they removed the ability to customize instruments too in this new update (10.0.2), but as some others mentioned, they just made it harder to find and it took me a while to find it.

Instruments and Vocals can be modified (reverb, pitch, and all the controls that were available before) are now in Smart Controls.

Here's how:

1. Select an instrument (my old custom ones were under "User Channel Strip Settings")

2. Click the round knob in the upper left corner for the Smart Controls

3. You will see a new empty window section in the lower right. This is deceiving because it says "Try chooseing a different patch in the Library to use Smart Controls".

4. Click on the round "i" icon in the Samrt Controls window, and a new section will appear

5. To the right of "Audio Units" there is a gray box that says "Audio FX". Clicking there, then Audio Units> Apple will bring up all the old effects.

Hopefully this helps anyone going through the same frustrations with this new interface!

I don't get the same results you are describing, just to make sure:

1) From the Library window on the left I choose an Instrumnet that I have saced in GB11. As you said these are now listed under "User Channel Strip Settings"

2) With :round knob", do you mean the Smart Controls Button on top of the Control Bar. This will open the Smart Controls Window in the window pane below the Tracks Area.

3) This is were I get lost. I don't see an empty window section unless you are referring to the Smart Controls Window when it has only a few controls available. Where should it say "Try choosing a different patch ..."

4) CLick the I-button , will open the Smart Controls Inspector. That is correct.

5) Your description is correct but your conclusion is wrong, at least based on what I see. THe Apple Menu lists all of Apple's own AU Plugin that come pre-installed with every system (has nothing to do with GarageBand).

If you compare the list in GBX to GB11, then you will notice that it doesn't list all the GarageBand effects. These were not AU Plugins. They were proprietary Logic Plugins that were compatible with Logic and GarageBand. Yes, these effects are still available as part of the pre-configures Patches, but you can't select them or change them. You only can change the Parameters that Apple made available as part of the Smart Controls Layout for a specific Patch.

Here is a list of the Effects you could choose in GB11. The red box are the Apple AU that are available in GBX

If you found a way how to access all these Effects in GBX, then I (and I'm sure other GB users) would be really curious how to do that.

Thanks

Has anyone been able to use the new garage band ?
