I just read through this thread and see similar pattern of reaction with other software applications that get a major update.
First of all, I agree that GarageBand X upsets a lot of users becasue it takes away important functionality or changes workflows that won't allow a user to do the work he or she used to do before.
Having said that. A lot of things are posted just out of frustration that things are not there or doesn't work becasue the user didn't take the time to actually learn the program and see that some stuff is still there, just different.
Apple didn't help the situation by calling this a GarageBand upgrade. This is NOT a GarageBand upgrade it is a new Logic Pro light application (with all its consequences). That is the main information that is missing and that caused so much frustration.
Apple should have said. "Here is a new app, it is a light version of Logic that lets you do almost everything that the previous GarageBand could do. Later, it lets you easily upgrade to Logic Pro once you outgrown GarageBand and want to move up. You need some time to learn it. And yes we killed the Podcast feature and limited the way how you can select internal Plugins - Sorry about that. We will implement it later if we get enough feedback (maybe wishfull thinging)".
After all, it is a free upgrade. You can try it and if it is a deal breaker, choose a different app if this doesn't work for you. I know this is painfull becasue it is a similar situation like iWeb where there is not much alternative out there once you got used to the app.
If you decided that you can work with the new GarageBand X, then the next step is to learn the new features, concepts and workflows. For that I wrote the first comprehensive manual "GarageBand X - How it Works". It explains all the details and also compares it to GarageBand 11 to show how stuff works different now.
I also like the GarageBand X better than the old one. I really think that it is easiere for a new user to learn and understand than the old one. Taking away the ability to add internal Plugins, I can understand that to make it simpler with the Smart Controls. Taking away the Podcast feature is a little strange, becasue they could just added that to Logic to maintain feature parity. Maybe there are some "non-technical" issues going on at Apple regarding Podcast support in general.
Hope that helps
