I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

One of Apple's strengths used to be its ability to use good graphics which helped in identifying objects intuitively. They also used the correct principles of graphic design. These have also deteriorated significantly, even to the point where everything is grey on a white background, one of the no-nos of graphic design. Maximum contrast should always be the case, eg, black on white or white on black, ie, strong colours against the weaker colours. Having bought my new computer I opened MS Word and tried to find my hard disk in the side bar. Eventually, I found that there is a hidden button to 'show' or 'hide'. Ridiculous!

This is NOT the thread to solve that issue. Start a "New" thread and describe your problem, by going to the top of this page, and clicking on the "Post" pop-up and select "Discussion"

There are users on this thread rather arrogantly replying that the issue is too old to be addressed. That is exactly the problem -- All this time, still no solution. So please don't contribute to the problem.

People recommending XtraFinder and/or TotalFinder -- just STOP! It is a dead end, Both third party apps have instability issues, and as soon as you update to El Capitan, the only way to use them is to disable Apple's SIP, which Apple explicitly warns against doing.

So, to recap, Apple got rid of a feature that tens of thousands of users relied on for years, then Third party developers tried to fill the gap, and finally Apple made it impossible for Third party developers to do so.

This is a serious issue for those with visual and/or cognitive issues. Many people have delayed upgrading because of it, placing their computers at risk.

Apple needs to step up. I am not a litigious person but I begin to wonder if an ADA suit is needed here?

Lastly, you needn't repeat the scold of sending feedback. Already have, along with many others who have stated same. But why not, I'll have another go at it.

Yeah I still really miss this feature 😟

The weird thing is, if you go into time machine and restore a file, when you choose where to restore it to, the coloured labels are there again, just taunting you as to how useful they actually are. That's the case even in sierra so I don't get it. It's like they are still able to display them but they are not allowing users to do that.

Sounds like a very Appley thing to do sadly (and this is coming from a fan!).

As a loyal apple user for many, many years, i did buy a new 27" imac, hated the os so I sold it and went back to my 24" running 10.6.8. I'll use this mac until it dies. So, Apple you lost new sales due to your obstinence and not leaving well enough alone. I believe Jobs would not have let this happen. And, I cannot sync my iphone to this mac with the new os on the phone, I use many pics for my business and itunes does not recognize the new os. The work around is google drive, very disappointed in Apple.

Would you be interested in posting the output from a Terminal command for one of the files you have restored from Time Machine that shows the old tag behavior?

Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal

xattr -lv <now drag and drop the restored file from the Finder to the Terminal window, then press Return>

The output should look similar to the following, but I'm hoping a restored file will have more

tmp.tmp: com.apple.FinderInfo:

00000000 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 00 00 00 |................|

00000010 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 |................|

I agree. It was such a helpful feature - especially for those with visual/cognitive issues. But also for the general Mac community. Those little "tags" are more difficult, more clicks, and not visually noticeable enough to helpful.

As MBryson says, I'm wondering if it will take an ADA attorney inquiry to get any notice of this problem by Apple. Three years and counting ... shameful.

I've been Apple since the first computer ever. I'm old, an Apple devotee, and I love all the new developments EXCEPT this removed feature!

Hi Bob!

Sorry for the confusion i think I explained it badly 😕

If I make a bunch of new folders -

User uploaded file

And in time machine select a file and choose 'restore to' then navigate to those folders, they look like this (within Time machine) -

User uploaded file

Which always reminds me how much easier it was before 😢

I don't get why they changed! Seriously, it's pretty obvious which one is more useful. At least they should have the option to choose, or maybe even make it so the dot is on the left of the folder or something.

This thread has had a lot of views, and there are a bunch of other ones out there so maybe there's still hope...

Seriously? You are talking about bringing a lawsuit against Apple because they made a change in the design of their proprietary software? They have no obligation to meet any ADA requirements outside of their employer/employee relationship. Since they are a private company, they are not even required to provide accessibility.

Since you have the option of running other software that will accomplish what you are looking to achieve, you have solutions.

Threatening a lawsuit really won't get you anywhere on this. Apple, like any other private company, is not obligated in any way to provide software that specifically addresses disability issues.

Actually, your reply made me curious. Not sure to what extent the following applies, but it might:

§ 1194.21 Software applications and operating systems.

(a) When software is designed to run on a system that has a keyboard, product functions shall be executable from a keyboard where the function itself or the result of performing a function can be discerned textually.

(b) Applications shall not disrupt or disable activated features of other products that are identified as accessibility features, where those features are developed and documented according to industry standards. Applications also shall not disrupt or disable activated features of any operating system that are identified as accessibility features where the application programming interface for those accessibility features has been documented by the manufacturer of the operating system and is available to the product developer.

(c) A well-defined on-screen indication of the current focus shall be provided that moves among interactive interface elements as the input focus changes. The focus shall be programmatically exposed so that assistive technology can track focus and focus changes.

(d) Sufficient information about a user interface element including the identity, operation and state of the element shall be available to assistive technology. When an image represents a program element, the information conveyed by the image must also be available in text.

(e) When bitmap images are used to identify controls, status indicators, or other programmatic elements, the meaning assigned to those images shall be consistent throughout an application’s performance.

(f) Textual information shall be provided through operating system functions for displaying text. The minimum information that shall be made available is text content, text input caret location, and text attributes.

(g) Applications shall not override user selected contrast and color selections and other individual display attributes.

(h) When animation is displayed, the information shall be displayable in at least one non-animated presentation mode at the option of the user.

ℹ Color coding shall not be used as the only means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element.

(j) When a product permits a user to adjust color and contrast settings, a variety of color selections capable of producing a range of contrast levels shall be provided.

(k) Software shall not use flashing or blinking text, objects, or other elements having a flash or blink frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz.

(l) When electronic forms are used, the form shall allow people using assistive technology to access the information, field elements, and functionality required for completion and submission of the form, including all directions and cues.

Section 508 also requires that individuals with disabilities, who are members of the public seeking information or services from a Federal agency, have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to that provided to the public who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency.
