I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Is there a way to return the colour folders when using the new tags like the old behavior of labels? These new circle thingees are too small and barely noticable.

These tiny color buttons on the right make absolutely no graphic sense. I wonder how they made it past Jonathan Ive.

AFAIK Ive only designs the hardware, not the software.

Tom ~ Jony Ive has a broad influence over the software...

I would like to know how to colour the folders.

Some suggestions were posted earlier in this thread HERE.

See the section Use a color or photo as the window’s background in this Apple doc:

what do you study, actually?

I think Apple should read what you posted. http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

I am also disappointed the labels are gone. I am a student and I used them to keep folders organized visually. There needs to be an option to turn that back on as the "update" takes away the functionality of it. The only reason I updated was that I was forced to: icloud stopped working immediately after the update came out.

It would be even better if the folder colors themselves could be changed instead of only having blue. This is not out of aesthetic concerns but again, the functionality that was lost. It seems like apple is more concerned about aesthetics than functionality here.

hi Tom.

my understanding is that ive is heavily involved in the OS. iOS7 i think shows a lot of his fingerprints and to really nice effect IMHO.

some things like this colored label issue is definitely a bridge too far. also, someone mentioned a sort of clunky method to undo a label which reminded me of the clunky contacts UI.

to get to contacts on my iPhone i have to click on contacts, click on groups, click on "all contacts" to turn /off/ the all contacts showing - and then i have to click on a single group to get this group to show. if i don't see my contact in this group, i then have to go back to groups, uncheck this group and then check another group and go and see if the contact is in there. my only recourse to clunking around like this is to check all contacts all the time which is totally unworkable.

i hope and sort of wish they go back to a UI in contacts that just lets me click on a group and see the contacts in that group.

my feeling is that they are implementing tags in the same way as they implemented groups in the sense that they want you to be able to have multiple selections but this results in a totally clunky and repetitive workflow when for instance you just want to see one group or you just want to take of all the tags in Mavericks AFAIK.

anyway, i think they went a bit overboard with the slicking up of Mavericks and they need to bring back the functionality of colored folders/files.

You can also change the icon on a folder.

Pick your icon and command-i for info. Click on the icon at the top of the info panel and copy it.

Click on the folder you want this icon on, command-i for info. Clck on the folder icon at the top of the panel and then paste the icon you chose.

Makes life much more interesting. I have quite a few amusing icons from pre-OSX days which can be used. PM me if you'd like some.

Changing icons isn't going to replace labels for me. I need to switch 'em out a lot and also have the color show for the whole line not just the folder... OH and for files too. It's just not practical.

But modding icons is an option for just customising folders a bit. I seem to have some custom icons that I made in PS with some weird tool at some point, not even sure how I did it. I have a few icon sets I got from somewhere floating around too.. so yeah, sure, I wouldn't mind collecting some more 🙂
