I hate the new tags in Mavericks, need coloured folders!!

Its not a complete fix but it works for me

I switched to Path Finder. I just couldn't take the new color tags method. As thers have said here, many of us have depended on color labeling in our work for years. For me, it would have added so much hassle to my workflow and slowed me down. For those that don't think it's a big deal, I'd encourage you to try an occupation where you're generating tens of thousands of image and audio files, processing them at breakneck speed, and needing to keep track of who revised what among a team of several people using the same server shares.

Color labeling was one of the key things that OSX had over Windows and other OS's. The visial cue of color labeling is vastly superior to the new tagging method.

Feels a little weird to ditch the OSX Finder after all these years, but I have to say Path Finder is a worthy replacement. I'm not complaining; the new OS was free, I just had to pony up for a Finder replacement.

What's pathfinder like otherwise? Do you have the other features sort of imposed on you, or can you chose to just use it for getting labels back? What does it do with tags or multiple labels then? Is it something that's always running or that you have to specifically launch every time you want it?

I'm loving Path Finder. After several days of using it, I'm wishing I had used it all along. It adds quite a few features I think are brilliant. I already can't do without: the drop stack sidebar location for quick-arranging files. I love dual browser windows for quick side-by-side directories. The ability to customize contextual menus is amazing. Built in tools like batch renaming, compression options, open location in terminal, editors, etc.. Advanced info for every file and folder. The arrangement is hyper-logical to me, with things right where I need them.

Tags it treats exactly how I wish Apple had done it: it keeps the identifying color label across the row, but then there's a tags column that displays additional tags by name. It keeps the same larger dot of color label (pre Mavericks) for selected files in list view.

It has a lot of options for how you run it, but I now prefer it to totally replace the Finder, launched at start and never off. It's not so much different from the Finder itself, so no, I don't feel it's imposing. Frankly, I've forgotten it's not the actual Finder until I use a different Mac and find myself going "Wait, where's that feature?"

It was confusing at first, when I realized it can display it's desktop right over top of the Finder's (dual sets of icons) which was obviously jarring. But since, I've set it to hide the Finder completely unless I specifically open a file in Finder. There's even an option to completely quit the Finder, but I haven't seen a need for that. Minor detail that I really like: optional old-school style trash can on the desktop. I also like that I can chanfge/resize the default fonts- my list views are now more readable than ever.

I highly recommend the 30 day trial.

These silly coloured dots are useless. These new tags have completely destroyed my work flow practice...I work with many thousands of files and used the coloured horizontal lines to manage the status of these across different folders. It is simply rediculous to replace these with a hard to see coloured dots that are placed away from the eye way over on the right side of finder. This is totally useless...the are impossible to see.

As I work with thousands of files it is nonsense to think that I can simply tag these with a colour as 'important' and search on that basis. Please give back the previous system of free-use coloured lines ...... the present tag system simply does not work with large scale at all.

What a BIG dissapointment to find this on Mavericks. If I had known of this I would NOT have upgraded from Mountain Lion.

Well, Mac OSX lacked labels till 10.3, so Mavericks is at least not worse than those 🙂

edit: And yeah.. I don't see how Mavericks is better than Mountain Lion. Supposedly it improves performance/battery life.. but I havne't seen it yet. Plus what good is it if the things you need to work efficiently are missing? Other than the labels debacle, Maversucks also messed up quicklook and gestures! Are they trying to make me work slower so that the computer will just *feel* faster by comparison or something?

Pathfinder is the best tool for MAC since the invention of the power cord and wireless keyboard.

Maybe one of only 5 programs I would consider "MUST OWN" it.

Been using it now for a long time. Its capacity for quick viewing of contents of pics/ vids/ PDF/ etc. etc. is almost "magical" 😉

I've gone to our company's IT and reccomended that they not deploy Mavricks. I know many in our company use the Lables for their work and wanted to warn them before they considered Mavericks. Our tech person was aware and our company has put a hold on the upgrade.

If and WHEN Apple releases Mavricks 1.0.1 with Labels returned, we will be able to move forward with the upgrades.

this is off-topic but does anyone know offhand if there is a way to view email attachments in Mac UI that doesn't require me to do this in Mail or another email client? i have really wanted to do this for awhile - a coverflow type view would be really helpful for me - and this seems as good a place as any to try and ask it again.
