Can't open Preview/Calendar/App store/iBooks/Terminal/Mail after updated to Mavericks

After I updated to Mavericks, I can not open Preview, Dictionary, App Store, iBooks, Keynotes, Photobooth, Quicktime, Contact, Calender, etc...

Mail keeps crashing everything I opened it.

iTunes and Safari is still working. Can someone tell me what's happening and how to solve my problem? Thanks a lot!

BTW, I remeber this symptom happened after I used Cleanmymac.

What to do to fix it:

  • Reboot and hold cmd+R (get's your mac in recovery mode)
  • Select Reinstall OS X, then click Continue. (This won't delete any files or software, only replace the osx files)
  • Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk
  • DONE!

I wont be using CleanMyMac anymore I think.. (I think CMM has caused me this problem)

Here a quick guide of a reinstall of Maverickx (this won't delete anithing of your personal files or apps!

OS X Mavericks: Reinstall OS X

First attempt a clean install...

If this doesn't work, which it didn't in my case, then download

Pacifist.

You will need a copy of the Maverick installer.

Use Pacificst to " Open Apple Intallers"

The go to Contents of Mavericks->Contents of EssentialSystemSoftware->Contents of Essentials.pkg->Applications

Then Click on the programs that don't seem to be working and insall. This helped me update certain applications that weren't working such as App Store, Font Book, Mail, and any others.

Thank you Lucas. Your suggestion to reboot and then do command R to reinstall the OS worked perfectly. No data or apps were effected, yet I now can open every single app fine again. Whew!!! As an aside, this works with OS 10.10 Public Beta 3. Really appreciated. I just recovered both my test desktop (running 10.10) and production laptop (running 10.9). This is what worked:

  • Reboot and hold cmd+R (causes Mac to enter recovery mode) - be patient as this loads
  • Select Reinstall OS X, then click Continue. (This won't delete any files or software, only replace the OS X files). Don't reinstall from Time Machine Backup.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk.
  • DONE! - If you use an SSD and TRIM you will need to reenable.

Thanks again!

I am having problems with my Dashboard widgets not working and not able to enable iCloud settings in System (it locks up).

I am running 10.10 Beta 3 (Yosemite). This computer came with the version of OS X prior to Mavericks (I forget the name).

I upgrade to Mavericks and then to Yosemite through the App Store.

Just to be sure, I can do this type of restore and then reupgrade to 10.10 without losing programs that I installed?

I'm new to Macs, but have decades of experience with PC's, including GNU/Linux.

Thanks!

IT WILL TAKE ONLY JUST FIVE MINUTES TO FIX THIS, PLEASE READ THIS.

you will find plenty of suggestions like to delete some folders, open terminal to fix that (terminal in itself is not opening), reboot and install OS in recovery mode. Don't go with any one of that here is a simple trick to fix the problem. go to this link - http://www.imod.co.za/2013/12/09/preview-textedit-terminal-opening-osx-mavericks / . just follow the procedure mentioned in that blog.

please mention here your experience after fixing the problem.

thanks.

THIS solved my issue!!! Clean My Mac created my problem!! I am so grateful to have found the solution. As others had said, I used Clean My Mac to clean up and make more space on my HD and then shortly after that, my mail app would "unexpectedly quit" when I double-clicked on an email to open it. I later discovered my Quicktime wasn't working, and neither were my Maps and iCal. I was able to read my emails using Safari to go to AOL, but the mail app would just quit when I tried to open an email. I have spent a month trying to find the solution and have tried other suggestions in the forum to no avail---but I've kept trying. Today I found these discussions that mentioned they had used Clean My Mac, and voila-------that was the culprit. I reinstalled Mavericks using the above link and everything is now up and running perfectly!!! I won't be using Clean My Mac again!!!
