Mavericks Deleted My Notes

After updating to 10.9 all my notes are gone. 😟

I have no Time Machine installed, no iCloud backup or anything.

Is there anyway i can restore them in the system?

Thanks!

Hey all. For anyone having trouble with this, all I can say is hopefully you had a Gmail account linked to your Notes app. If you did, then all your notes have been emailed to yourself and stored in a tab called >Notes in the left-hand area along with [Inbox] [Starred] [Spam], etc. I've been looking at this page for the past half-hour trying to restore all my lost notes which I had moved into the Notes app expecting iCloud to backup. Yes, silly me to depend on apple, this is the third strike when its come to losing content I've left in their hands, won't happen again. But thankfully Google had backed up all my notes successfully where apple failed to do so, hooray! 😍Even a note I had written as soon as two minutes before I encountered this problem was safely backed up to my gmail, phew.

KarlFromUS's method wasn't working for me since in my /Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes folder there were only 3 files and they all had V2 in their name. I also tried logging in at iCloud.com and I was receiving an error when trying to view my notes and it just gave me the option to send an error report...way to go again apple!

I followed the instructions you provided, But the only files in there were 3 "V2" files, I restored the "V1" Files from the time machine deleted existing "V2" and renamed the "V1" to "V2"... opened Notes and all my notes were back!

As I was celebrating my victory, they dissapeared again within seconds after the Notes Application finished "updating".

Grrrr

I too was surprised to see all my notes in the Notes app gone in Maverics, and I do NOT use iCloud. This quick fix worked great and all my notes are back. Thanks!

go tofile:///Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes /

delete the files with a V2 in their name, and replace the one in the existing files with a 2. Then open up notes and they are all there.

Here's what worked for me...

1) Go to System Preferences on your Mac and click iCloud

2) Uncheck "Notes" and it will ask you if you want to delete the notes from your Mac

3) Click "Delete From My Mac" and let it do it's thing

4) Then re-check the "Notes" button and you should be good to go

Now I can create a note on my iPhone and it will show up in my Notes app on my Macbook.

Likewise, I can create a note in my Notes app on my Mackbook and it will show up on my iPhone.

This worked for me...cheers

That's not the problem. We all can, and have done that. The problem is losing all those notes on all your devices after having them for a year. Going to backup/container etc and replacing what little is in there only lasts 30 seconds then reverts to "gone" even after disconnecting from iCloud before doing that. The problem is, cloud saved 2 out of 20 notes, time machine saved 4out of 20 notes, 2 the same as iCloud. The rest are just gone. Now, a check list to fix that is what is being asked for.

I was in the same boat, losing my mind because none of the suggestions were working or helpful until I stumbled onto this one. It refers to problems encountered while upgrading to Mountain Lion but the solution worked for recovering my notes..

I had this problem - all the notes I wanted were "On My Mac", which vanished as soon as I upgraded (and weren't in the new Notes app either). In the end, I had to find the files which Mountain Lion had failed to migrate to the new app, in the following location:

~/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/Notes.mbox/

There was one folder containing a whole bunch of numbered folders inside that. Going through each of the numbered folders right down to the "Messages" folder inside each, I found one or more files of the name format "nnnnn.emlx" (where "n" is a numeral). I copied all the .emlx files I found into a single (other) directory - as a backup in case something didn't work or I needed to do it again - then selected them all and dragged and dropped them onto the Notes app.

It's pretty poor form that the upgrade process doesn't reliably handle On My Mac notes, but at least it's not too difficult to recover.

Hope this works for others!
