USB Flash Drive Not Mounting After Mavericks Update

Has anyone else encountered a problem with their USB thumb drive not mounting after Mavericks update? I've got a 16GB Silicon Power USB 3.0 Flash Drive that mounted fine in Mountain Lion prior to my Mavericks upgrade on Tuesday. However, after the update, it will not mount. Now my MBP does not have USB 3.0 but this thumb drive was backwards compatible with 2.0.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how to address this problem. A cursory Google search for this problem turned up no results as of early morning on Thursday, 10/24.

Cheers,

CJ

I find it unacceptable that Apple has not yet addressed this issue. I find it equally unacceptable that I need to consider purchasing third-party software to possibly "fix" this problem created by upgrading to Mavericks. This thread has yet to provide a clear cut solution from anyone knowledgable that fixes this USB disk mounting problem many of us continue to have. I keep searching but have had no luck in finding a fix. Here's to hoping the 10.9.2 update dropping in March will fix this issue.

I have the exact same problem, MBP late 2011. Since upgrading to Mavericks, my SanDisk Cruzer 16GB will not mount anymore. Moreover, my Epson P-3000 image tank does not mount anymore, and my digital camera does not mount anymore. Other thumb drives mount fine. The SanDisk shows up on the iMac we have, and I -- since it contains an install disk for Mavericks -- I can(!) boot from it. This means that the thumb drive is fine, but only after starting my installed Mavericks version, it is somehow disabled.

I did reinstall the OS, clean install. Then all is fine. However, after copying Network Settings from the previous install through Time Machine, the USB devices don't mount anymore. So, reinstalled Mavericks again -- clean install -- and transferred all but Network Settings from my previous install via Time Machine. That worked fine, the USB drives did mount...... for some time. As of yesterday, I noticed that my drives do not mount anymore.....

Therefore, it definitely is a software problem that stems from Mavericks.

I was having similar symptoms with a USB hard drive--worked fine before mavericks update, didn't mount afterwards. Also wouldn't show up in disk utility.

On a lark, I booted the computer into the recovery partition, then launched disk utility. The USB drive showed up in disk utility when the computer was booted into the recovery partition. I clicked "verify disk", the result was OK, so I re-booted into Mavericks and now the USB drive mounts just fine.

Hope this helps someone else, though who knows--maybe it was something unrelated that finally made things work.

I had the same problem. Research hinted that I might see my flashdrive on my desktop. I did. Then I clicked on "Finder" and clicked and dragged the flashdrive icon from my desktop to the "Finder" menu just under the Macintosh HD line. I then "ejected" the icon and removed and replaced the flashdrive, and it reappeared in the "Finder" menu where I had placed it. I hope this helps.

Hi,

Solved!

I had the same problem and I got this simple solution.

Before the Mavericks update I had to use MacFuse and NTFS-3G to mount my external hard drive.

After the Mavericks update, my MBP doesnt detect my external hard drive anymore.

So I unplugged my external drive from USB port. Then go to: System Preferences --> NTFS-3G --> Click "disable" NTFS-3G.

Connect your external hard drive. Be happy!

I had the same problem and your solution worked for me, even though I had a slightly different program

Halavista's solution worked perfectly, thanks!!!

Just for the record,

Here was the problem:

I had 2 USB flash disks (both FAT32 formatted) and also tried a friend's windows USB disk, which would not mount properly (seemingly only after OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" update). They'd show up in the sidebar & in my disks list (and in Disk Utility), but if I tried to open them in Finder, the window would briefly flash something like contents but go back to the previous screen - I could not view/edit the contents of the disk.

Disk Utility could Unmount & Mount the disks, but that wouldn't alleviate the problem (and would fail upon Varify/Repair with "could not unmount."). The disk's root folder would also show up in Terminal /Volumes/, but attempts to copy files via terminal were met with strange results such as "The file xzyabc already exists.", with the file having Not been copied when viewed on another computer. Various methods of Reformatting (always FAT32, since I was transferring to Windoze) also did not solve the problem.

As halavista said, this solved my problem:

I followed the instructions here to reset the System Management Controller (SMC):

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Note that the only indication that the SMC reset occurred is given in this hint:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4615991 -- the magsafe power adapter LED may blink. I'm not sure if mine did, I wasn't watching it at the time.

After booting back up, both of my USB flash drives are acting normally - I can read & write them, eject/re-mount and see the new contents.

Maybe the Apple SMC article should list this USB drive issue as another reason to reset the SMC.

(Aside; The SMC article says that this would also solve the fans spinning up to full blast - which my computer started doing recently. The SMC reset does Not appear to have stopped that.)

My specs: MacBook Pro 2.8 GhZ Intel Core i7 // Mac OS X 10.9.2
