Mavericks: The application can't be found

Since upgrading to Mavericks, when I try and double click on any file to open them directly, a window pops up saying "The application can't be found". If I open the application then go to Open... it lets me open any files still thankfully but this is a huge pain. Happening so far with InDesign, Preview, Word, HTML files and anything else I've tried. Anyone else having this problem??

Has anyone come to any greater understanding on this issue? I can connect manually via Go/Connect to Server and then connect with CIFS and things work fine, but I have to connect manually. If I use one of my links in Finder, the problem occurs. And I have deleted them all and recreated them after connecting via CIFS.

So, after I manually connect via CIFS, the links work, all is fine.

If I just click the link and it automatically connects the drive to the server, the problem occurs.

Does anyone know how to make it automatically connect via CIFS when you click one of your links in Finder?

The "permanent" fix is to first create local aliases to the network share folders, and then add those aliases to the sidebar. Do not add SMB network share folders directly to the sidebar because they will eventually break and exhibit the behavior discussed in this thread.

So a simple fix:

  1. Create a new folder in your Home folder called "Links"
  2. Drag the Links folder to your Finder's sidebar area to add it
  3. Connect to your network share and browse to the folder you would like a shortcut to, and select it
  4. Drag and drop an alias (Command-Option drag) of this folder into the Links folder
  5. Select the new alias from the Links folder, and drag it to the sidebar

Moral of the story: Local aliases to network folders are much more resilient than sidebar items created directly from the network folder. Create local aliases to your favorite SMB network folders first, and add the alias to the sidebar instead.
