Display artifacts in Mavericks

Is anyone else seeing an issue with video artifacts in Mavericks? It's like a bunch of digital garbage on the screen. Seems to be a refresh issue. It's showing up in patches and clears off if you move windows/apps over the affected areas.

My computer turns off becouse of a graphick switching, the same problem as I turn it off or on in System Preferences/Energy Saver. It doesn't matter on which operating system I am Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, Maverick the same stuff man. I have nothing against Apple as a best dealer for inovative ideas and best computer and sofware producer (I think so before I buy this one) but I'm really dissapointed about my Macbookpro becouse of this bull **** they did with this Switching..... And I think I'm not the only one.

Graphick Switching , Switching, Switching ,Switching, Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching ,Switching, Graphick Switching !!!!!...........

Again and Again and Again.I try everything but it won't help I think I must replace my motherboard it really hurts becouse of a costs and I read some articles there is no guarantee it realy fix this problem I don't know what to do. Did they have motherboards for Macbookpro's 15 inch mid 2010 without any graphick swiching hardware on them?

And it ends with the same message all the time:

Actually, it probably is the logic board. I had the same problem, automatic graphics switching did nothing. Going into Mission Control would make it go away temporarily, but it always came back.

I had to take it to local Apple place (we don't have an Apple store here), and, since it was covered under AppleCare, they sent it to Apple, who replaced the logic board.

No issues since. Well, except the new logic board died and it had to go back to Apple and get replaced again.

So what I'm saying is that graphics switching might be working for you now, but that is quite possibly just masking an underlying logic board issue that will eventually rear its ugly head.

FWIW, this is my second Macbook Pro in a row that has had a faulty logic board (first a 2007, now my current early 2011), which doesn't seem to be uncommon issue: http://logicboardmac.blogspot.com/

Handy link on that to diagnose your Mac for logic board problems: http://smallbusiness.chron.com/diagnose-logic-board-issues-macbook-45917.html

Several users have replaced their logic boards and continued to experience the artifacts problem. Furthermore, for many of us, reverting to Mountain Lion resolves the problem, as does turning off AGS in Mavericks. There are also reports of Mavericks causing display artifacts with some video cards in Mac Pros. It all points to something funny with certain graphics drivers in Mavericks.

That's not to say that screen artifacts couldn't be caused by hardware problems - they usually are and if AGS has no effect on the screen artifacts you're experiencing, it could be a different issue from the Mavericks problems. I still strongly urge reverting to Mountain Lion before spending big money on a logic board. If the artifacts persist in ML, that's a second data point along with AGS suggesting a hardware problem.

These artifacts indicate GPU (video chip) issue. A reflow (heating of the solder balls under the GPU at around 250 degrees) could fix the problem temporary but in order to have a permanent result you need to remove the GPU and replace the solder balls (reballing). If you intent to do just a reflow you will definitelly need apropriate flux to be injected under the GPU. Amtech flux is very good for this job but quite expensive (on ebay most Amtech flux that is offered for under 25$ from China is low quality Chinese copy). There is also CS-FLUX which seems to be flux specially designed for BGA rework by a laptop repair workshop. You can see a few videos about it here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfTs0PdXrvM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgIjdw8aDOA

and it is offered on ebay for around 10Euro for 15cc here

http://www.ebay.com/itm/390792468898

There are also some offers on ebay for video repair for Apple boards for around 50-75Euro from the same seller

Not sure if I'm just imagining it or what but I tried switching my browser from Safari to Chrome and the issue seems to have mostly gone away. I say mostly because I still get the odd artifact when I do stuff in iPhoto. But artifacting in other cases seem to have stopped. I could be calling it a bit early since it's only been two days but I usually see artifacts a couple times a night and since switching I haven't gotten any (except when in iPhoto).

May 18, 2014 6:20 PM in response to cmx

OK so I spoke too soon about Safari being the issue. The problem actually got worse after a while regardless of whether I was using Safari or Chrome with my entire system just locking up (strangely it was UI only, any background processes that I had going were still running). Anyway everything seems to be OK after the 10.9.3 update.

Dec 17, 2014 2:16 PM in response to John Vargo

I've had that kind of issue, too - late 2012 mini. One of the symptoms is a "trail of square black boxes" where the mouse pointer has gone, which can be cleared by moving a finder window over the area.

I think this is a software issue, not hardware, because I use my mini "headless," that is, by screen sharing from other (not using Yosemite) computers.

You can help Apple figure this out and fix it if you will pass the details of your system and symptoms to them at apple.com/feedback.
