Watching YouTube video full screen while working in other monitor

So after upgrading to Mavericks when I have a Chrome browser window with a youtube vidoe loaded and I click to watch fullscreen my other monitor is taken over with a grayed out background. Quicktime started doing this awhile back, and Vimeo used to do it in Mountain Lion when it was embeded in another site, but if I went to Vimeo.com to watch a video this didn't happen. How do I change this?

FYI, I have all Mission Control / Spaces options unchecked as I don't use that and don't want multiple Menu bars and whatnot.

Does anyone know why this is? This makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. At least give us the option to turn it off, Apple. What the ****?

I can view embedded YouTube videos fullscreen just fine, but not on YouTube.com. Perhaps I need to change my Flash/HTML5 settings for YouTube to circumvent this...

Try this.

1. You must have separate Spaces set in System Preference - Mission Control. If you don't both displays are treated as one extended display similar to Lion and Mountain Lion arrangement, causing one display to grey out when using Full screen modes.

2. Launch or move your browser onto the display you want the video to be on.

3. Put the browser into Full Screen mode by clicking on the diagonal arrows at the top right of the browser window.

4. Navigate to Youtube and find your desired clip.

5. Put the clip into full screen mode, by clicking on its icon within the video window.

The video shoud be on that display in full screen, no menu bars or Dock should be visible, with full access to the other display.

It sounds like Chrome has not implemented Full Screen properly then, or as swankboy states, only particular video formats cause the issue. I don't use Chrome myself, but instaling it here and briefly trying it, seemed to work OK, but my test was very limited.

If you come accross one that does not work as expected in Chrome and then view the exact same in Safari, does it work correctly in that browser? If so, it is more likely that it a Chrome specific implementation issue, rather than an OS X implemetation.

Ensure that you are using the latest version, and do you have any extensions installed into Chrome that may be effecting it's behaviour.

If Chrome has any forum support pages, you may try looking there to see if others have the same issue and if they have a solution.

It is possible that its also graphics card related and if Chrome takes that into account. My test was on a 2008 Macbook with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M.

Hi, I just re-read you previous post.

You said,

I presumed that you were using OS X 10.9.x as we are in the Mavericks (10.9) forum area, not the Mountain Lion (10.8) forum area.

This changes things a little.

In Mountain Lion, Apple's implementation for multiple displays is a little different to Mavericks, where both displays share the same 'space' so it is an extended display setup. Mavericks allows each display to have its own space, thereby allowing each dislay to act independantly of each other. This is where I did my brief test.

Due to Mountain Lion's limitation, I think what you are seing is expected behaviour. Any Full Screen app will result in the other display to be greyed out.

In Mountain Lion, if you put the application into Full Screen mode, using the diagonal arrow icon at the top right of the application window, your second diplay is greyed out. This does not happen in Mavericks when displays are set to have different Spaces in System Preferences - Mission Control.

I suspect what is happening with videos, is that the full screen icon in the video window is not a true Apple full screen activation, but rather a fill the whole screen implementation, so would be treated differently by the OS.

It looks like the same behaviour can now be seen for ALL videos watched on youtube from Chrome.

There is no differentiation as it was a few weeks ago. (Probably based on codec)

Now any video you watch in youtube with fullscreen in chrome will basicall make use of a "space".

Solution: use Safari if you want to keep working on the other monitor.
