osx Mavericks can't save scanned documents with hp scanjet

I have installed osx Maverics yesterday and I can't save my scanned documents. I'm using hp scanjet G2710. When I try to save I'm getting this message:

"An error has occurred saving the file because it could not be written to. Check the properties for the file to make sure it is not read-only."

This has been answered before but here goes again. A few options:

Create an automator Service workflow that selects image files then converts them to PDF. If you do not know how to do it, send me your email and I will send you my workflow.

Also:

Simply drag the scanned JPEG2000 document or folder of JPEG2000 scans onto the Preview.app and select "Print...", open the PDF tab in the bottom left corner of the window. Now select "Save as PDF".

A few more things you can do,

- If your scans are a custom size, Manage custom sizes in Paper Size before saving as a PDF. I bleed my scans by increasing the scale percent by 1%-2%, thus avoiding having to crop to clean up edges

- Open your saved multi page PDF document with ColorSync Utility.app and apply i.e. Reduce to 150 dpi to save disc space if your initial scan was too high. Look on github for a collection of quartz filters.

It's a few extra steps; "Drag and Drop to Preview.app", "Print and Save as PDF". But it's quick and easy.

I feel my scans to jpeg2000 in fact produce better quality PDFs. I intend in keeping this workflow.

The best one is Preview - I simply go to Preview - Go to File/Import from ... (my wireless printer is listed) - hit Scan then File/Save document. If more than one - you do have to scan individually, but open Preview and in thumbnail view - drag on top of document and it adds them all into one file.

This one is the best - not everyone can open the Jpeg2000 when I send so I've given up on that one.

it was simple for me .

1- systeme preferences

2-printers and scanners

3-click on the plus button ➕

4-you will see the printer connected to the mac .for example : photosmart C5100 series.[Cxxxx]

5-click on it.

6-then where it says Name

location

use

on the name change what is between the [Cxxxx] to your printer name .

7- click add

thank you .

Has anyone solved this problem yet. I read all 10 pages and nothing sounds like a solution. I want to be able to scan multiple pages into one PDF document easily like I was able to do before installing Mavericks. I have a HP Photosmart 3180. Can't believe this has been going on for 5 months! Thankfully I didn't install Mavericks on my laptop (only my IMAC).

Basically the problem has not been solved. There are lots of workarounds, but you can't do things the way you used to. I've been following the discussions for maybe 3 months. I have not heard anything official from Apple or HP about this. I can't be sure, but I am guessing that the problem introduced with Mavericks was due to HP's software having made use of undocumented or unsupported (for 3rd parties at least) features in OS X. Whoever blew it, I wish they would just own up to it. I don't think we'll ever see a real "solution". Instead, find the best workaround (or new method of doing whatever you used to do) and go with that.

Thank you for explaining the steps in using image capture. This worked for my HP Photosmart 3180. Your solution allowed me to scan multiple pages and save in one PDF document easily.

I finally found a solution for my HP Photosmart C4640. HP Scan stopped working after Mavericks was installed, and neither Preview or Image Capture could see the scanner. I just uninstalled all the HP software in my applications folder with the idea I would reinstall and see if I could get Image Capture or Preview on board. It continued to work as a printer running through the systems dialogue, but I had no scanner capabilities.

I thought I was hooped as I couldn't find the disk to reinstall the software, but I tried this download for HP Printer Drivers from Apple:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907

Now Preview and Image Capture see the scanner and things work perfectly, it was the silly HP software that was hiding the scanner from everything but the HP Scan program, which I haven't bothered reinstalling. I just have to manually string PDFs together which isn't difficult.

Thanks for all the help

I just had this problem. I solved this by quitting HP Scan, doing (only) Step 2, and relaunching HP Scan. I rescanned my document and I did save (PDF image only). I did not have to do steps 1, 3, 4.
