osx Mavericks can't save scanned documents with hp scanjet

I have installed osx Maverics yesterday and I can't save my scanned documents. I'm using hp scanjet G2710. When I try to save I'm getting this message:

"An error has occurred saving the file because it could not be written to. Check the properties for the file to make sure it is not read-only."

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Same problem with my Scanjet 8390 duplex scanner. I called HP and they said they don't support legacy products. I guess they think we're all going to buy a new HP scanner because they don't want to update their driver. What do they consider a legacy product? One year? Two?

Point is... It's a scanner, All it does is scan. It still functions perfectly (I hooked it up to another mac not upgraded to Mavericks). It's a software problem, So, I'm not buying a new scanner because the driver doesn't work.

Looks like my only hope is for Apple to fix this.

Great news!

I found a work around. Not that I am happy with having to use something diferente from the scanner software, but at least works while HP realizes there is a problem and makes an update.

What I did was to go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES>HP SCANJET Open the preferences, and under the Buttons option select one of the buttons and choose OPEN IN PREVIEW.

That way, when you press the scan button in the scanner, it will send the image to Preview and there you can crop it, and save as any file that you like. This works with my HP ScanJet 4070, but I am guessing the preference panel should be very similar for other scanners.

Hope it woks for other. Let me know.

I am having the same issue with a HP ScanJet 4370. I tried going into the HP ScanJet under System Preferences but Open In Preview was not a choice and since, as another poster noted, the scanner is only tethered using the HP software, Image Capture was not an option either. The suggestion with scanning a single page, saving it, closing HPScan, and scanning another page works but is not feasible if you have more than a couple of pages to scan.

After downloading a software update from HP, Open in Preview was an option under System Preferences.

However, I found another workaround by using Acrobat X Pro.

  1. Open Acrobat X Pro
  2. Under the File menu, point to Create and select PDF from Scanner.
  3. Under Input, click the drop-down for Scanner and select HPScan.
  4. Click the Scan button. This will open HPScan and you can scan your document as usual, including multiple pages. However, at the top, instead of the normal options, there is a button labeled Return. When you have finished scanning your document, click the Return button and you will be taken back to Acrobat X Pro where you can save your scanned pages as a PDF.

Nice work kgoodson_ntcc. The acrobat option, for some reason is not working for me, but I am sure it will work for other people. It recognizes the Scanner and do scan the document, but when I hit "Return" it does not do anything and kind of freezes the application. When I try to quick it says that there is a process active and can not close so I ended up “Force Quiting” the app.

I will try with different settings to see what happens.

Still very good option for those that have the acrobat and works. It should work.

Trassel, try the Export... option in the File menu. It gives you all the options, jpg, jpg 2000, OpenEXR, PDF, PNG, TIFF and The quality bar to use minumum up to maximum.

Hope it helps.

I have the same problem with my HP4890 (could be wrong with the model). When I use preview I am not able to save as a high quality image .... defaults to something like 400k .... and I have not been able to find any way around that.

I'm not sure if this already posted, but here is another work around that worked great for us.

  1. Open System Preferences (Apple Icon in the top left hand corner)
  2. Select Printers & Scanners
  3. Select a Printer that is connected directly to your Mac
  4. Select Scan (tab selection to the right of Print)
  5. Select Open Scanner
  6. Scanner will open with selections for Scan Mode; Kind; Resolution; Size; Orientation; Scan To:; Name; Format; and Image Correction

I found the following workaround at least for my HP Photosmart scanner/printer:

  1. Go to HP Website and download "HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Driver - Mac OS X 10.8"
  2. Released: 2012-11-08 Filename: HP_Mountain_Lion_lnk_SW_v12.23.14.dmg
  3. Here is a direct link --- http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&softwareite m=mp-111986-1
  4. Make sure during the installation to click and select "Additional HP software"
  5. My installation did not complete on the 1st attempt -- crashed on the very last step -- but I was able to finish by re-running /Applications/Hewlett-Packard/Device Utilities/HP Setup Assistant
  6. You should see a fresh new icon for HP Scan -- by clicking About it says: Version 4.0.50 (114)

This one works and saves without errors on Mavericks

Has anyone tried this one with a stand alone scanner?
