Oct 24, 2013 1:30 PM in response to brian_marsby adrian-polglase,I also have this problem! The hard drive thing is beginning to make me a little concerned.
I have a late 2011 17" Macbook Pro with the Thunderbolt Display with a USB hard drive connected.

Oct 24, 2013 2:49 PM in response to adrian-polglaseby Chris.Cooling,Hi - have this problem too with a 2012 MBP and thunderbolt monitor. No drive connected to monitor though, but there is one connected to the USB(3.0) on the MBP.
Very annoying.

Oct 24, 2013 3:32 PM in response to brian_marsby Chris Such,Hi,
Same thing here ...
I have 2 USB drives connected to the TBD on my 15" 2011 MBP.
I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that the displays now operate in their own spaces by default?
Cheers, Chris.

Oct 25, 2013 6:52 AM in response to Rik Vanderengby Chris Such,Ok,
I took a bit of a punt and did an SMC reset based on a few similar issues other people were facing.
So far, it seems to have worked. I might give it a few more days to be sure but it is worth trying for everyone else out there.
Cheers, Chris.

Oct 25, 2013 6:55 AM in response to Chris Suchby Chris.Cooling,It is a weird problem. I have 2 thunderbolt monitors. One at home and one in the office. The one at home when plugged in does not wake from sleep, but the one at work comes back on fine!

Oct 25, 2013 11:28 PM in response to brian_marsby extankerman,I have exactly the same problem as brian_mars, with the same configuration of MBP and Thunderbolt display. If this is an intentional power-saving wheeze from Apple, then it would be nice to know.

Oct 26, 2013 2:11 AM in response to brian_marsby Eshilnikov,The same isssue. Did anybody find the way to solve it?
-
Oct 26, 2013 7:26 AM in response to brian_marsby Chris Such,All right, the SMC reset hasn't solved it as originally thought :(
I have now unflagged the check box that gives each display its own space ( basically controls all the new 10.9 display magic) so seeing how this affects everything.
Obviously the work around is to just set the MBP to never sleep but that kind of defeats the purpose.
Cheers, Chris.

Oct 26, 2013 7:33 AM in response to brian_marsby Karl Kaufmann,Same issues here.
It appears to be a bug that also had happened on a recent update (Lion or Mountain Lion?). There, a solution was to have the active keyboard input sources display in the menu bar. I tried that here, but so far, no change. I also get the same firewire device notifications as Brian.
I'm wondering if another firmware patch may be needed.

Where does one find the check box, to which you refer?
-
Oct 26, 2013 10:26 AM in response to extankermanby adrian-polglase,I think he meant the checkbox on
System Preferences > Mission Control > Checkbox for 'Displays have seperate Spaces'
I've just tried deselecting it myself, you'll hear back from me if it works...

Oct 26, 2013 11:15 AM in response to brian_marsby Kalharri,2012 MBP + Thunderbolt Display only. SMC reset worked for me. Plus, it fixed a minor problem where png files weren't displaying properly in Finder.

Oct 26, 2013 11:50 AM in response to Kalharriby adrian-polglase,SMC reset didn't work for my 2011 MBP and Monitor. Although since doing so, my launchpad has decided to start playing up. Neither did the 'Displays as Seperate Spaces' box being unchecked work.
Grrrr....
