Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I have the same config. 2013 11" Air 8G i7 HD5000 iGPU connected to

a Dell U2913WM over displayport since Sep.

The mouse skip every few seconds. and I was lucky enough to discover the same method as

flo.riano (switch between the "displayport 1.2" in the monitor's settings) so I can using my system *_^

I ask apple about the problem but haven't receive any response.

A few things to note:

1.If connect the monitor to my AIR using DVI converter have no problem.

2.I didn't force EDID to use RGB mode b4 I discover the switching trick. So it shouldn't be related

to the RGB mode issue.

3.It work on my machine if it's running bootcamp with Win7. So the Windows driver is ok.

So most probably a problem with the display system/driver in OSX.

4.My colleague's 2012 mac air connect to my monitor(Displayport) just fine.

5.A PC using ATI 7970 connect via display port have no problem too.

6.Although I believe a display driver update should fix the problem. I also notice EIZO release a firmware for

one of their monitor which seems to have the same problem. So it should be fixable with a monitor firmware update as well.

http://www.eizo.com/global/support/compatibility/fw1_01/index.html

7.This problem appear on different model of monitor from different manufactures, So it's not a problem

with paticular manufacture's problem

If anyone from apple is reading this, please put this in the bug list.

THIS IS A REAL BUG/ISSUE and not some isolated compatibility problem.

Goodluck to us~ 😝

I have exactly the same problem as described above with a brand new

  • MacBook Air
  • 11-inch, Mid 2013
  • Processor 1,3 GHz Intel Core i5
  • Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
  • Graphics Intel HD Graphics 5000 1024 MB
  • Software OS X 10.9 (13A603)

connected to a brand new

  • Dell U2713H display
  • with a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable
  • and resolution 2560x1440

when using standard USB mouse with cord like

Logitech M-BA47 and others

The Apple Magic Bluetooth Mouse works slightly better - but not as it should either. The different mouse's are tested working together and alone with Bluetooth switched on and off - with no difference.

The problem is that

the mouse cursor on the display jumps ahead of the movement of the real mouse

and this makes it impossible to do serious work on the computer.

It is also clear that opening the Dell display menu and toggling the "Displayport 1.2" option (as described by others in this post) removes the problem and the mouse starts working as it should - until next time the display is switched off - then the "Displayport 1.2" option must be toggled again for the mouse to work properly. The "Displayport 1.2" option does not matter - only changing the value matters.

The MacBook Air Dell display combination works perfect with a DVI-D connection by using a Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter and a standard DVI-D cable connected to the display. The maximum resolution in this combination is 1920x1080 and not what is promised in the Apple Air and Dell specifications.

I can't tell if this is a Apple or Dell problem but nobody should go for this combination before a fix is provided by either Apple, Dell or both.

I have been having these exact issues with my Dell U2713H connected via DisplayPort to a 2013 MacBook Air 13". It even makes the keyboard unreliable as it seemingly misses both key up and down events when it's spacing out every 1 or 2 seconds, making keys not work and even more annoyingly, stick.

I've tried sleeping/waking the computer, disconnecting/reconnecting the screen, turning the screen on/off and numerous other things. Nothing seems to help reliably.

Today I went through the menus on the screen and on a lark enabled DisplayPort 1.2 (Menu, Display Settings, DisplayPort 1.2) and it's been fine for a couple of hours now. I don't dare disconnect should it start misbehaving again, but at the very least it's a thing to try if you're having problems as well.

Same problem here, DELL U2713H with this fix applied - http://embdev.net/topic/284710

My workaround is amusing - if you go into the menu on the monitor, and use the up/down keys on the monitor to go through the items, it fixes it. However, you need to do that every time you turn on the monitor/reset the computer.

Note I am not actually changing any settings, just scrolling through them.

Crazy. All of our Mac Airs 2013 model show this problem and work with this solution.

Ridiculous, actually.

I have the MacBook Pro with Retina (2.6 GHz with 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) with OS 10.9.2.

I'm using an Acer B296CL monitor as my external display.

Like everyone here is experiencing, I too would get the mouse/cursor stuttering on the external monitor (and on the MacBook when both connected). However this is with the mini-DP to DP cable. When I use the HDMI cable it elminates the stuttering. My setup uses a CalDigit Hub between the two machines. Since using the HDMI cable (Acer > CalDigit Hub > MacBook Pro) I haven't had any problems.

I'm assuming it's an OSX firmware issue based on everyones problems.

I had the jumping cursor on my MacbookPro 8,2 with 10.9.5, so I upgraded to 10.10 public beta 3. It persisted. Long story short, for me it was f.lux, the app that tints the screen towards sunset to relax the eyes. Disabling it stops the jumping cursor! (Also, it only happened on my Dell U2412M at home, not on the Fujitsu P24W-6 I use at work.)

Does anyone else run f.lux?

I had the same issue where after every 5 - 7 seconds the mouse cursor will freeze for a second before continuing. I am using Apple Magic mouse so no external mouse dongle. The only thing plugged into my USB port of the other side (Left side) is a 128GB flash drive. I have an Early 2015 13" Macbook Pro. The external monitor is Samsung SyncMaster S24B300 connected via HDMI.

The way I resolved this issue was to Change the refresh rate of external monitor from 60 Hertz (NTSC) which was selected as default to 50 Hertz (PAL) which it should be for EU region. The rest of the settings are Scaled to 1080p and standard Rotation with under-scan off.

Hope this helps.

Im just wondering are you guys using a thunderbolt adapter? I realized when I was using a thunderbolt to DVI adapter i would have the lag problems with the mouse and anything I did on the laptop would lag. I was using some cheap adapter I found on amazon and ended up replacing it to apples adapters and the lag went away. I have 2 external 27'' monitors connected to my mac book 2013 late model and no more lag. So im thinking if you guys are using some cheap thunderbolt to hdmi or thunderbolt to dvi adapter

Hello,

I have almost the exact same setup as hongkongs and flo.riano. A 2013 MacBook Air 11" and Dell U2913WM connected via miniDP <-> DP cable from Dell. I have the exact same problem with mouse lag. Whenever I stop/restart the Mac the bug is re-introduced and it can be fixed temporary by changing the "DP version" option. I can guarantee there is no problem with the monitor and DP connector/cable because I've been using it with one of my other PC's for some time now. This is clearly a bug in the MacBook so I think it should be addressed as one. I have limited options for Apple support in my country so if anybody has some resolution about this please post it here. Also if needed I can provide a video presenting the bug.

Thank you.

To narrow down the problem, I tried using a minidisplayport to DVI adapter instead of minidisplayport to displayport ... this only gives 1600x1200 or 1920x1080 max resolutions, but there is absolutely no lag.

If I continue to use this setup, and just plug in the minidp<->displayport cable to the other thunderbolt socket, mouse starts to lag right away. So to me it looks like it has everything to do with the minidp<->displayport connection.

I'll need to find a dual link DVI adapter somewhere to try and see if the screen works w/ that at 2560x1440. If yes, problem "solved" - just not in a very elegant way.
