Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

SOLUTION HERE:

Unplug screen connector (In my case mini-dp to HDMI) on the mini-dp end and plug it in again.

I personally use both bluetooth keyboard and trackpad, running OSX Sierra on a MacBook Air early 2015.

This solved the cursor lag after sleep.

Note: The cursor lag is both for the onboard AND external trackpad.

I have the same config. 2013 11" Air 8G i7 HD5000 iGPU connected to

a Dell U2913WM over displayport since Sep.

The mouse skip every few seconds. and I was lucky enough to discover the same method as

flo.riano (switch between the "displayport 1.2" in the monitor's settings) so I can using my system *_^

I ask apple about the problem but haven't receive any response.

A few things to note:

1.If connect the monitor to my AIR using DVI converter have no problem.

2.I didn't force EDID to use RGB mode b4 I discover the switching trick. So it shouldn't be related

to the RGB mode issue.

3.It work on my machine if it's running bootcamp with Win7. So the Windows driver is ok.

So most probably a problem with the display system/driver in OSX.

4.My colleague's 2012 mac air connect to my monitor(Displayport) just fine.

5.A PC using ATI 7970 connect via display port have no problem too.

6.Although I believe a display driver update should fix the problem. I also notice EIZO release a firmware for

one of their monitor which seems to have the same problem. So it should be fixable with a monitor firmware update as well.

http://www.eizo.com/global/support/compatibility/fw1_01/index.html

7.This problem appear on different model of monitor from different manufactures, So it's not a problem

with paticular manufacture's problem

If anyone from apple is reading this, please put this in the bug list.

THIS IS A REAL BUG/ISSUE and not some isolated compatibility problem.

Goodluck to us~ 😝

@hongkongs:

Great job of finding out that Eizo monitors have similar problems - to me it seems ironical that small brands (like Eizo, which I have never heart about before) are working hard to fix these problems whereas huge enterprises like Dell or Apple do not even acknowledge that there is a problem.

Have you found out how one can reproduce the problem? If so, we could provide a proper bug report to Apple (including a video showing the issue) so they can not simply ignore it.

Nov 16, 2013 3:45 AM in response to flo.riano

EIZO is a very famous japanese brand who makes professional monitor since the good old CRT days.

It's one of the top brand in the professional level. So they treat their customer seriously. guess that's why

they care about such issue and release the firmware update.

The only way to reproduce the problem is to connect the new mac air to these models of monitor which can

induce this underlying bug. I guess mostly happen on monitor which is above full HD resolution(2560x1080,2560x1440 etc.).

This problem seems to be mostly on the OS side. cuz no matter u use USB mouse or trackpad or even bluetooth mouse this problem also occurs. So it's not a signal interference issue.

Seems to me the display driver have some sort of problems when reading monitor's EDID value. hence the RGB/YpBpr issue.

BTW, if u're using the default YpBpr mode and the screen is blur, u can adjust the monitor's sharpness setting which can compensate that effect which makes it look normal. 🙂

But unlike the mouse skipping problem happened to the MBP/bluetooth mouse b4, the mouse skip on displayport is predictible. I mean it skip to the same direction the cursor is moving. it just skip ahead further.

Hopefully more ppl will post which monitor have this issue with the new Air so we can narrow down the problem.

Nov 21, 2013 6:53 AM in response to flo.riano

Hello, I have this exact same issue, on my Dell U2713H. Using a brand new 13" Retina MacBook Pro.

When I connect the external monitor, mouse pointer becomes jumpy, on both the external screen and on my MacBook Pro's built-in display.

Like some other ppl in this thread, I can make it go away temporarily by entering the monitors menus and moving around some in them. When I exit the menu the jumpiness is gone. When the MBP falls asleep and I wake it up again, the problem is back (most times anyway).

I never see this behaviour when I connect my gaming PC running Windows 7 to the monitor. Neither did my old MacBook Pro mid 2010 have this issue.

Hi All,

Same problem here.

Macbook Air 13 (2012 MID) running Mavericks

Apple Bluetooth Keyboard

Apple Magic Mouse

Dell P2314H Monitor (DVI to miniDP port converter)

I week ago the mouse started to lagging and skipping. I talked to Apple Costumer Service they suggested to test it on an other mac to make sure its not beacuse of my mac. I tried out with a Macbook Pro 13 (2009 MID). Tested for an hour on Mavericks OS. It is worked well so far. But mine did the same, until its suddenly started to misbehave.

It is really dissapointing I bought the keyboard and the mouse to be able to use it with my monitor...

I really hope when the first Mavericks update came out it will fix this problem for us.

I have exactly the same problem as described above with a brand new

  • MacBook Air
  • 11-inch, Mid 2013
  • Processor 1,3 GHz Intel Core i5
  • Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
  • Graphics Intel HD Graphics 5000 1024 MB
  • Software OS X 10.9 (13A603)

connected to a brand new

  • Dell U2713H display
  • with a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable
  • and resolution 2560x1440

when using standard USB mouse with cord like

Logitech M-BA47 and others

The Apple Magic Bluetooth Mouse works slightly better - but not as it should either. The different mouse's are tested working together and alone with Bluetooth switched on and off - with no difference.

The problem is that

the mouse cursor on the display jumps ahead of the movement of the real mouse

and this makes it impossible to do serious work on the computer.

It is also clear that opening the Dell display menu and toggling the "Displayport 1.2" option (as described by others in this post) removes the problem and the mouse starts working as it should - until next time the display is switched off - then the "Displayport 1.2" option must be toggled again for the mouse to work properly. The "Displayport 1.2" option does not matter - only changing the value matters.

The MacBook Air Dell display combination works perfect with a DVI-D connection by using a Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter and a standard DVI-D cable connected to the display. The maximum resolution in this combination is 1920x1080 and not what is promised in the Apple Air and Dell specifications.

I can't tell if this is a Apple or Dell problem but nobody should go for this combination before a fix is provided by either Apple, Dell or both.

To: Tore

I have a displayport to DVI-D adapter which comes with one of my ATI 7970 display card. I was

able to get to 2560x1080 without the cursor jumping problem. U can try other DVI adapter see if that helps.

only a dual-link DVI adapter can handle 2560x1080 resolution. "DP to DVI-D" adapter only means it's

DVI-Digital. u need "dual-link DVI-D" adapter.

To: JTChris

Your problem seems to be different than the rest of us here.

Ur MBP isn't Haswell HD5000, Monitor is standard FullHD instead of above FullHD. Your problem is very similar to a magic mouse issue which occure much earlier (Maybe two years or even older). I remember read it

somewhere it's related to BT MagicMouse and displayport adapter issue(cursor jump around the screen without pattern). some ppl fix their problem by wrapping "tin foil" around the adapter.

I suggest u look for those thread which should be the root of your problem.

Goodluck guys~
