Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

SOLUTION HERE:

Unplug screen connector (In my case mini-dp to HDMI) on the mini-dp end and plug it in again.

I personally use both bluetooth keyboard and trackpad, running OSX Sierra on a MacBook Air early 2015.

This solved the cursor lag after sleep.

Note: The cursor lag is both for the onboard AND external trackpad.

I have tried to capture video with iphone but camera cannot capture it... white trail of mouse pointer is mostly visible on light gray (top of e.g. safari window)... there is no visible trail on builtin display on macbook...

I have connected MBP 15 2012 with discrete GPU... it doesn't have mouse lag problem... but it also have mouse trail on my u2713H...

same Dell cable... miniDP to DP was used

Here is more on "mouse trail" http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/t/19513238.aspx

It is called RTC overdrive and it looks like there is no option in Dell menu to disable this "feature"...

anyway, this is not related to problem that mouse start to lag just after waking up MBP with HD5000 from sleep ...I could live with RTC but wakeup problem with mac is a real problem (I do not want to go to menu to disable/enable DP 1.2 each time my macbook wakes...)

I have the same problem. New (Haswell) MBP w/ Mavericks. My old Air doesn't have the problem. Turning off the monitor for 10s then back on again seems to fix it about half the time. Very frustrating. Given that this has been reported as far back as 2009, I do not think we should expect Apple to fix this problem. They simply do not care. Shame.

I have been having these exact issues with my Dell U2713H connected via DisplayPort to a 2013 MacBook Air 13". It even makes the keyboard unreliable as it seemingly misses both key up and down events when it's spacing out every 1 or 2 seconds, making keys not work and even more annoyingly, stick.

I've tried sleeping/waking the computer, disconnecting/reconnecting the screen, turning the screen on/off and numerous other things. Nothing seems to help reliably.

Today I went through the menus on the screen and on a lark enabled DisplayPort 1.2 (Menu, Display Settings, DisplayPort 1.2) and it's been fine for a couple of hours now. I don't dare disconnect should it start misbehaving again, but at the very least it's a thing to try if you're having problems as well.

I'm also having the mouse lag issue on the following configuration:

MBP Retina 15" Late 2013, using a 30" Apple Cinema Display connected via the Apple Dual DVI adapter.

I'm using a Magic Mouse and the issue only occurs with the lid closed. Sometimes it's allright, but i don't know why, couldn't figure out the pattern until the next reboot.

Would be great to have a solution to this!

So I plugged in a wired mouse and I'm not experiencing any issues. Both a wireless mouse (with dongle) and Bluetooth mouse are having issues.

I'm suspecting RF interferences... I came across an article last night that talked about how USB3 (of which there is a hub in the Dell U2713HM) can cause RF interferences. I also read that there are issues with Thunderbolt creating interferences on the 2.4GHz frequency (used by wireless devices)... and so when you plug in either a mDP cable you're essentially creating an antenna which amplifies the issue.

Now, I don't get this problem when I use my 23" Dell monitor via the same mDP to DP cable so I don't think that's what is creating the issue. This is so confusing and is looking more and more like a witch hunt and voodoo to me.

So for the time being, I'm using my wired mouse.

Same problem with a macbook air mid 2013 13", i5, HD5000, connected to a Dell U2713H. Cursor jumps, but as sendaal says sometimes it's allright, very annoying. I had my macbook checked in the store but they couldn't find anything.

I tried a Logitech mouse, apples usb mouse, and the magic mouse with bluetooth connection, always the same problem.

I am using the original dell mDP to DP cable. At the store I tried the apple thunderbolt display which seems not to have the problem. I am wondering if a mDP to mDP cable could be a solution.

The problem with the colour mode can be fixed with the EDID override file. Works just fine.

A solution would be great, don't want to get rid of the dell display.
