Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

I have the same config. 2013 11" Air 8G i7 HD5000 iGPU connected to

a Dell U2913WM over displayport since Sep.

The mouse skip every few seconds. and I was lucky enough to discover the same method as

flo.riano (switch between the "displayport 1.2" in the monitor's settings) so I can using my system *_^

I ask apple about the problem but haven't receive any response.

A few things to note:

1.If connect the monitor to my AIR using DVI converter have no problem.

2.I didn't force EDID to use RGB mode b4 I discover the switching trick. So it shouldn't be related

to the RGB mode issue.

3.It work on my machine if it's running bootcamp with Win7. So the Windows driver is ok.

So most probably a problem with the display system/driver in OSX.

4.My colleague's 2012 mac air connect to my monitor(Displayport) just fine.

5.A PC using ATI 7970 connect via display port have no problem too.

6.Although I believe a display driver update should fix the problem. I also notice EIZO release a firmware for

one of their monitor which seems to have the same problem. So it should be fixable with a monitor firmware update as well.

http://www.eizo.com/global/support/compatibility/fw1_01/index.html

7.This problem appear on different model of monitor from different manufactures, So it's not a problem

with paticular manufacture's problem

If anyone from apple is reading this, please put this in the bug list.

THIS IS A REAL BUG/ISSUE and not some isolated compatibility problem.

Goodluck to us~ 😝

I just had a chat with Apple support and was advised to bring my computer including the large screen to the next Apple store. I expect that Apple does their testing, evaluation and debugging without the consumers being involved, so I am a bit disappointed. The support person told me that there must be a hardware problem as they do not have a large track of other users having the same problem.

So apparently the problem is not acknowledged as an official bug which needs to be fixed by Apple.

Please, if you want Apple to fix this, talk to the support. Here is a link to the support chat https://getsupport.apple.com/ConfirmationAction.action# . This only works if you have a valid care protection plan. If you don't have one, you probably need to call the service number, which you can find on http://www.apple.com/support/contact/ .

EIZO is a very famous japanese brand who makes professional monitor since the good old CRT days.

It's one of the top brand in the professional level. So they treat their customer seriously. guess that's why

they care about such issue and release the firmware update.

The only way to reproduce the problem is to connect the new mac air to these models of monitor which can

induce this underlying bug. I guess mostly happen on monitor which is above full HD resolution(2560x1080,2560x1440 etc.).

This problem seems to be mostly on the OS side. cuz no matter u use USB mouse or trackpad or even bluetooth mouse this problem also occurs. So it's not a signal interference issue.

Seems to me the display driver have some sort of problems when reading monitor's EDID value. hence the RGB/YpBpr issue.

BTW, if u're using the default YpBpr mode and the screen is blur, u can adjust the monitor's sharpness setting which can compensate that effect which makes it look normal. 🙂

But unlike the mouse skipping problem happened to the MBP/bluetooth mouse b4, the mouse skip on displayport is predictible. I mean it skip to the same direction the cursor is moving. it just skip ahead further.

Hopefully more ppl will post which monitor have this issue with the new Air so we can narrow down the problem.

Hi!

I have quite close symptoms and set-up: the mouse doesn't skip, but is sluggish after hooking up an external monitor using mini-displayport. Using HDMI and single-link DVI did not seem to cause this issue (an dual-link DVI adapter in Norway is over 160$...).

My set-up:

* MBP 17" mid-2010 running Mavericks 10.9.1.

- 2,53GHz i5

- 8GB RAM

- Intel HD-graphics (internal)

- NVIDIA GT 330M 512MB

* Philips 272P4 LED monitor 2560x1440.

* Mini-DP -> DP cable.

So with all the mentioned set-ups, it seems like the constants are MacBook and the DisplayPort-input on an 2560x1440 non-Apple monitor.

I have the same problem. New (Haswell) MBP w/ Mavericks. My old Air doesn't have the problem. Turning off the monitor for 10s then back on again seems to fix it about half the time. Very frustrating. Given that this has been reported as far back as 2009, I do not think we should expect Apple to fix this problem. They simply do not care. Shame.

So I plugged in a wired mouse and I'm not experiencing any issues. Both a wireless mouse (with dongle) and Bluetooth mouse are having issues.

I'm suspecting RF interferences... I came across an article last night that talked about how USB3 (of which there is a hub in the Dell U2713HM) can cause RF interferences. I also read that there are issues with Thunderbolt creating interferences on the 2.4GHz frequency (used by wireless devices)... and so when you plug in either a mDP cable you're essentially creating an antenna which amplifies the issue.

Now, I don't get this problem when I use my 23" Dell monitor via the same mDP to DP cable so I don't think that's what is creating the issue. This is so confusing and is looking more and more like a witch hunt and voodoo to me.

So for the time being, I'm using my wired mouse.

Hello,

my issue was:

when I plug in the HDMI monitor I would get laggy mouse. Unplugging would solve the issue.

However, I am using a Microsoft wireless mouse, so first thing I noticed is that the Touchpad was working perfectly lag free. So the issue was the wireless dongle of mouse and keyboard. Had to unplug and plug it back in. Now it's working perfectly.

A few things to clarify:

  • Does the logitech lag on both OS X and Windows (run via Bootcamp or VM?) ?
  • What happens if you switch off bluetooth?
  • Is the macbook opened or closed when the lag occurs?
  • Have you tried a cabled usb mouse?
  • Do you mean by lag that the cursor is not moving more than a second or less?
  • Can you test with the monitor connected via a MiniDP to DVI cable or anything like that?
  • MagicMouse is working without problem?
  • Do you have some sort of other bluetooth mouse at hand to try out?

Does the logitech lag on both OS X and Windows (run via Bootcamp or VM?) ?

- OS X only

What happens if you switch off bluetooth?

- Bluetooth can't be turned off, I have Apple BT keyboard.

Is the macbook opened or closed when the lag occurs?

- Closed. I tried to open. Same result.

Have you tried a cabled usb mouse?

- Yes, but i hate wired mouse, and it is also laggy.

Do you mean by lag that the cursor is not moving more than a second or less?

- Sometimes I miss the cursor, but it appears away. I can't write well, but it's unpredictable. I move the mouse steady rate, but falters cursor does not follow exactly.

Can you test with the monitor connected via a MiniDP to DVI cable or anything like that?

- Only Thunderbolt cable. No other for me.

MagicMouse is working without problem?

- Yes, but not ergonomic. I sold.

Do you have some sort of other bluetooth mouse at hand to try out?

- Yes, Logitech M555b. This is even worse. Useless.
