Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

SOLUTION HERE:

Unplug screen connector (In my case mini-dp to HDMI) on the mini-dp end and plug it in again.

I personally use both bluetooth keyboard and trackpad, running OSX Sierra on a MacBook Air early 2015.

This solved the cursor lag after sleep.

Note: The cursor lag is both for the onboard AND external trackpad.

Same problem here, DELL U2713H with this fix applied - http://embdev.net/topic/284710

My workaround is amusing - if you go into the menu on the monitor, and use the up/down keys on the monitor to go through the items, it fixes it. However, you need to do that every time you turn on the monitor/reset the computer.

Note I am not actually changing any settings, just scrolling through them.

Crazy. All of our Mac Airs 2013 model show this problem and work with this solution.

Ridiculous, actually.

So all of you sound incredibly more knowledgeable in computers than I am..so I apologize if this is a stupid comment. But I had the same issue with my mouse/keyboard lagging on my external monitor (acer I found buried away in my basement). I also was unable to view streamed videos because they would skip. However one night while I was trying to fix the problem I remembered that I changed my desktop background settings (on my monitor) to slide through a bunch of photos I have (every 5 seconds)…I guess it kind of makes sense why it worked, but I changed it to just show one picture all the time and it fixed the problem immediately. I don’t have any mouse lag or typing lag any more and the videos stream fine…not sure if this helps.

Again this conversation is way out of my league but I figured I say something

Unfortunatly I don't even expect Apple to fix this anymore. The sad thing is though, this makes it impossibile for me to use products i've grown to depend on for years.

Do you guys attach the external monitors directly to yout macs or do you use any kind of adapters? I was curious weather getting a monitor with displayport would alleviate the issue... as opposed to my dual-dvi adapter -> 30" ACD...

so so frustrating!

I'm using a mDP to DP cable, directly into a DisplayPort and am reproducing the issue. You know, I bought a MacBook Pro Retina because I wanted a high-end machine that "just worked". But I've had WAY more problems with it than I've ever had with any PC I've used. All my PC's work with this monitor flawlessly, regardless of DVI versus DisplayPort. Only my $2300 rMBP has problems. I've spent 20 years in the PC world (and I'm still largely in it) but I'd expected Macs to have fewer problems. Out of the box, I can't even connect this to my $1200 monitor. That's pretty lousy, and definitely not what I'd expected from Apple.

Symptom : Lagging & Unstable Mouse

Model : MacBookPro; 13" brand new as of jan 2014

OS : Mavericks 10.9.1

Monitors : 2 x Dell U3014 ; both setup for DP 1.2

each monitor with dp -> DP cable to individual dp ports on Mac. ( not daisy chained )

Mouse : generic PC USB ( tow different ones tried )

Reading another post in here on this subject I tried something.....

Went to to single U3014 with laptop closed and set Dell - DP 1.1 : That worked

Plugged in second U3014 and switched it to DP 1.1 : That worked

Open Laptop with both monitors enabled and hooked up as DP 1.1 : That worked

Switched both Dells back to DP 1.2 : Still worked .. go figure

Shutdown & Reboot Laptop open and both monitors attached in DP 1.2 mode : That worked and it is stable.

Did not expect the last two lines , but I am not going to agrue with the result, my guess though is that it will fail again in a day or two and the mystery will show itslef again

OK... so after a day, the mouse went unstable three more times.

The trigger to fail ( for me at least ) is often when I remove and replace the LTop onto the monitor cables.
I.E. head to a meeting with the LYop and return and hook up the monitors to the tow DP ports.

One common fix was to change either of the displays from 1.2 -> 1.2 OR 1.2 -> 1.1

No reboot restart or reboot required.

Go figure

It appears that I can confirm this issue as well, a customer came in with a Retina 15" MacBook Pro, fully decked out with every option. He said it cost him nearly $4,000.

We absolutely could not understand why every time an external monitor was plugged in, either Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort OR HDMI, that the performance just took a nosedive, and it would take the computer as long as four seconds to do something trivial like a mouse click on a menu item.

This sounds like a firmware/graphics card driver issue that needs to be addressed. Customer was running 10.9.3.
