Mouse cursor lags with external monitor

hello,

i have just purchased a dell u2913wm monitor with a native resolution of 2560x1080. when connected to my macbook air (with mountain lion) using a mini displayport cable my cursor starts lagging on both screens. basically, when i move the mouse along a line on my desk the cursor results in a very erratic trajectory. this occurs when using a usb mouse and with the integrated trackpad. if the monitor is turned off or unplugged the mouse is smooth again. .

a similar problem was reported a few years ago but somehow the thread is just archived ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0 ).

also, i had trouble with the monitor that osx recognised it as ypbpr, so i had to force it to treat it as rgb device, because otherwise the image was unsharp.

on my macbook (mid 2010) running mavericks the cursor is smooth, so the monitor and the cable are apparently not faulty.

I have the same config. 2013 11" Air 8G i7 HD5000 iGPU connected to

a Dell U2913WM over displayport since Sep.

The mouse skip every few seconds. and I was lucky enough to discover the same method as

flo.riano (switch between the "displayport 1.2" in the monitor's settings) so I can using my system *_^

I ask apple about the problem but haven't receive any response.

A few things to note:

1.If connect the monitor to my AIR using DVI converter have no problem.

2.I didn't force EDID to use RGB mode b4 I discover the switching trick. So it shouldn't be related

to the RGB mode issue.

3.It work on my machine if it's running bootcamp with Win7. So the Windows driver is ok.

So most probably a problem with the display system/driver in OSX.

4.My colleague's 2012 mac air connect to my monitor(Displayport) just fine.

5.A PC using ATI 7970 connect via display port have no problem too.

6.Although I believe a display driver update should fix the problem. I also notice EIZO release a firmware for

one of their monitor which seems to have the same problem. So it should be fixable with a monitor firmware update as well.

http://www.eizo.com/global/support/compatibility/fw1_01/index.html

7.This problem appear on different model of monitor from different manufactures, So it's not a problem

with paticular manufacture's problem

If anyone from apple is reading this, please put this in the bug list.

THIS IS A REAL BUG/ISSUE and not some isolated compatibility problem.

Goodluck to us~ 😝

Hello,

I have the same problem with my mouse on my late 2014 MBP. Must mention that my mouse is not a BT mouse, but a wifi Asus model.

I solved the lag problem by understanding first the issue. I didn't thought for a second that a lagging mouse problem can be linked to transparency of the background for example..like I saw in other cases.. or modifying other type of settings. It just didn't make any sense and it also seemed batshit crazy to me to think so. It's like changing a wireless router signal problem by repainting the walls in another color.

So my thought was what if my monitor(which is a Phillips and not a Dell like in most cases) is making some sort of antenna with it's HDMI cable and the thunderbolt HDMI adaptor, that blocks or interfere with my mouse wifi signal.

So all I did was to wrap some aluminum foil on the HDMI connection from the monitor with the HDMI connection from the thunderbolt adaptor. It all worked well. And just to make sure that this was the problem, I've taken down the foil to see if the lagging appears again, and it did, just seconds after the removal of the foil. Put the foil back and it disappeared.

So until it will start lagging again, and I surely hope it will not, I'm sticking my guns to a more realistic approach than changing background transparencies like I've saw on other cases.. 🙂

I'm sticking to this theory for now and I hope it would solve your/others problem too.

Cheers!

Hi All,

Same problem here.

Macbook Air 13 (2012 MID) running Mavericks

Apple Bluetooth Keyboard

Apple Magic Mouse

Dell P2314H Monitor (DVI to miniDP port converter)

I week ago the mouse started to lagging and skipping. I talked to Apple Costumer Service they suggested to test it on an other mac to make sure its not beacuse of my mac. I tried out with a Macbook Pro 13 (2009 MID). Tested for an hour on Mavericks OS. It is worked well so far. But mine did the same, until its suddenly started to misbehave.

It is really dissapointing I bought the keyboard and the mouse to be able to use it with my monitor...

I really hope when the first Mavericks update came out it will fix this problem for us.

Hi all,

I think I'm experiencing the same thing. Using a Philips 27" 2560x1440 screen (also had the RGB issue). When using just the laptop, everything is smooth .. and after pluggin in the bigger screen, mouse starts to "pause" every few secs. Using a late 2013 Macbook Pro retina 13". Mouse lag happens both using a magic mouse as well as the trackpad, and no matter if the laptop lid is open or closed. Cursor is also lagging on both the external and internal screens ... as long as the external screen is connected.

Funny thing is that my previous 2012 Macbook Air connected to the same screen didn't have any problems.

I'm using a minidisplayport to displayport cable.

Question: should I be able to find the "DisplayPort 1.2 compatibility mode" switch somewhere in the preferences? As far as I can see there are only very limited options available for displays, maybe this is "dumbed down" on this version...

Looks like at the moment there is no real fix to this? So I'm kind of just hoping for some software update later down the road.

Cheers, Sami

Great! Sami951, I've an Air so can't test dual thunderbolt/mDP output.

When u connect the mDP to DP cable. Did u connect it to a monitor or only plug the cable in it?

I mean is the port actually outputting signal to a monitor? Or even plug in the cable cause the mouse skipping?

if the problem occurs with just the cable plugged in. then maybe it can solve by using another cable perhaps?

I think we've narrow down the problem a lot since the beginning. Anyone know where to file a bug report to apple to make this issue official?

Somebody suggested it might relate to newest Mavericks version, however I'm still on Mountain Lion (10.8.5) with a mid 2012 15' MBP and recently started having the same issue. I'm using my MBP in clamshell mode with a Samsung SM24A550 external monitor and never had had any issue until about a month ago. At first I thought it was my old Mighty Mouse failing, but I replaced it with a Genius Bluetooth mouse and have the same problem with the freezing monitor/mouse. Maybe it's some update regarding firmware, otherwise I can't devise why it suddenly stopped working properly.

Hello to all my fellow frustrated users!

I think I can help us reach a solution.

Is it ridiculous that Apple doesn't seem to scan their own pages to resolve known bug issues? OF COURSE. Do they know this is a problem? OF COURSE. Here's how I see it: this problem is not really a problem because we are not the loudest voice in the room. Apple probably has some system of tallying complaints related to certain bugs. When the tally reaches a threshold, they decide to do something about it. So why not this bug? Well, they are probably devoting attention to the tens of thousands of teens out there crying about the latest changes to their iDevices on iOS8. Moral of the story: I don't think we are raising a big enough cry about this. I think the only way that we will get their attention is by submitting feedback. And I mean LOTS of it. I suggest we team up. More specifically, go here https://www.apple.com/feedback/ and make sure to reference THIS thread.

And tell them what you are telling us. I have started to do this every time I use my external display and encounter the problem. I plan on submitting feedback as often as I encounter the problem (almost daily). Hopefully, they will take notice. That seems like the right thing to do if you care about your customers. Thanks to all who have endured and continue to submit feedback despite the lack of changes.

What happens if you switch off bluetooth?

- Bluetooth can't be turned off, I have Apple BT keyboard.

Is the macbook opened or closed when the lag occurs?

- Closed. I tried to open. Same result.

Some things you can test:

  • Try with the macbook opened with a fresh restart of OSX.
  • Can you try with bluetooth off just for testing the mouse?
  • Is just the mouse lagging or is the whole picture freezing? Try with a video playing so you can see if the whole screen is freezing.

TigerCat-hu wrote:

Have you tried a cabled usb mouse?

- Yes, but i hate wired mouse, and it is also laggy.

The exact same as with the wireless?

TigerCat-hu wrote:

MagicMouse is working without problem?

- Yes, but not ergonomic. I sold.

Same for me.. way to flat.. I am using a magic trackpad also.
