I'm having the same problem but it's only when the hard drive my music is on is connected. For example I was able to update my apps without a problem when the hd was disconnected. Once I plug it in, iTunes hangs for ages, sometimes doesn't even come up at all, and when after a few force quits it finally works it only lasts for a song before the beach ball comes up again. Maybe the problem stems from the media library?

Yes my iTunes library and music are on an external USB drive.

I found that creating a new library and re-importing the music has helped with the slowness, but I lost all of my play counts, stars, playlists, etc.

NOT HAPPY ABOUT THAT at all. I'm very anal about my various collections and this basically ruined my music collection.

Extremely unfortunate, but at least it's working again.

I had problems also. I signed out of the iTunes store, and then signed back in. I then had to add my computer to iTunes Match, and update iTunes Match. This restored everything that I was previously unable to access. This happened to me after a previous iTunes upgrade. I don't know if it is hardware related (I have a 2008 Intel iMac) or if it is a software issue. It is an easy thing to try first. Good luck.

I can't re-import anything as iTunes is completely frozen and using 100%. I have tried leaving it overnight with no result. Tried rebooting, tried repairing disk permissions, tried a clean install.

Nothing. I have sent 12 reports.

I'm really getting angry now. Please find a solution, apple. How I can spend my money in your store if I CANT GET TO IT. That should be your incentive, if basic customer service isn't enough.

I am having the same issues. itunes hangs after 3-6 seconds. Not responding, 100% CPU. Nothing seems to help. I have sent several reports. I do have Match, but not sure if that is it. I did have several ibooks before it changed, but again, not sure what it going on. Splitting the ibooks and the audiobooks maybe? who knows... all I know if that without Itunes one is very limited! help please!

No issues with the store here.

But quite a few with library management (mine is stored locally in the default iTunes Media Folder location)

And Video/Audio playback random extended hangs

Activity Monitor - 100.1% CPU usage, not responding for iTunes during these hangs

Any editing of my library, say something as simple as changing a piece of media from TV Show to Movie causes about a 5 min hang (screen does not change just shows cursor) which then turns into the spinning wheel for about another 5 minutes. Has been held up like this for over an hour at times.

The worst part though. Is this is also affecting all playblack, audio and video. Purchased content as well as third party content. I tested with known good content (redownloads from itunes store, and also third party MP4 files which worked fine to prior to update and continue to play without issue or hang in iTunes 11.1.1 on my Windows 7 computer.

And when it hangs during playback there is nothing (easy or reasonable) that can be done to toggle or kickstart it, all controls fail to do anything. It may come back in 5 min (just pick right up) or it may not come back at all (waited over an hour and half before).

When checking activity monitor during these playback hangs shows iTunes using 100.1% CPU usage.

The cursor shows the spinning wheel in iTunes app only, outside of the app it shows a cursor, not hung up or frozen.

I am having these issues on 2 identical iMac's since updating to OS Mavericks and the latest iTunes. No issues prior to the updates.

Troubleshooting done -

Have restarted

Emptied trash

No new updates

Reset Safari, cleared cache/cookies/data

Deleted Java Applets, Settings and Temp Files

tested with known good content, issue persists

Have Reinstalled iTunes

Any further ideas?

I was considering a new install of Mavericks... but because this is affecting 2 separate computers as of the moment Mavericks was installed on each (and iTunes 11.1.2). I am starting to worry I will be stuck hoping for an update to the OS to fix these apparent glitches.

ITunes isn't working at all on my 2009 MacBook Air with 2 Gb RAM. I installed Mavericks twice to correct a Safari problem (no tabs, hanging when i switched sites). Then I discovered iTune wouldn't play at all. I can do a "quick look" on a file in the finder and it plays but not in iTunes where I can see the files, but when I push the play button, nothing happens. I Removed plugins but that didn't help. Zapped the program and re-installed. Same thing.

I have also discovered that QuickTime player (both versions) doesn't play my QuickTime movies anymore. It takes minutes to "convert" a .MOV file. Convert to what? What happened to the QT components when I "upgraded"?

I'm glad i didn't install Mavericks on my iMac which I use as my main music server. On the AIR I'm migrating from OS X 10.6.8 and so far the experience hasn't been pleasant. There are some performance improvements, especially in Safari, some thing are better, but other interface changes have negatively impacted the user experience. I'll be sticking to 10.6.8 on my iMac for quite a while.
