I have finally fixed mine.....check your network settings if using iTunes over a wirless/wired netwok. My music is on a remote network drive. My air play from my macbook pro will not stream music to the stereo w/o freezing/pausing. I am also now able to sync iPhone 4.

The issue was that the update changed my workgroup name to the default "workgroup". Changed it back to my workgroup, all fixed.

Hope this helps

Hi, have you found something work for you ?

Happens to me as well but not started in mavericks all started with Mountain Lion , a few weeks before he left mavericks , I thought the problme would be solved by updating , but he did not, it's very frustrating strange thing is that in my case not only iTunes is , if any player, have proven Vox and another which I forget the name .

I also feel the same when you play a song in quick look ( Finder) .

I am desperate this problem is with me for the last month and a half went to a apple store and tell me that my machine has nothing that can not help me, and tried everything , reset my machine with a clean install , restart PRAM , repair permissions hise disk hardware test , and nothing has changed.

When iTunes pause my machine freezes a moment and returns to normal when continuous playback , stops about 1s though sometimes hard to 5s .

We appreciate if you find solution , because I am going crazy . Since neither in apple have been able to help me .

My machine is a Macbook Pro late 2012. Mavericks , iTunes 11.1.3 did not correct my mistakes. Do not know what else to try .

Read through first two pages....I'm having all the above problems.

My ~45GB iTunes library is on a 64GB MicroSD card in a NiftDrive SD card slot "enclosure." Everything has worked great up until now. A brief outline:

- Can't change a bunch of videos from "Home Video" to "TV Show." iTunes hangs, beach ball, "not responding" in the force quit menu, and a force quit doesn't fix the problem. Finally, by some miracle, it works, but then when I try to add artwork...same issues. It's such a hassleI've just quit, which stinks since the new machines don't have a DVD drive.

- Playing a song (right off the drive, not over network, remote drive, etc) it skips, freezes, and pauses like a bad connection would make a Pandora song our YouTube video do.

- Suddenly get error messages saying it has lost the iTunes library or that it is not writeable (I forget the exact verbiage).

- At one point, the issue overflowed from iTunes and affected the whole computer. I clicked off the frozen iTunes window onto Safari...that froze. Then onto Finder....that froze. Then clicked Excel...that froze. The whole computer just froze as solid as Siberia until I forced it to shut down by holding the power button. Coming back up was slower than usual and I got the beach ball on the login screen. Now computer is squirreley and stuff behaves very oddly.

The gremlins seem to have retreated back to the iTunes home base now and left the rest of the machine alone. iTunes still has the same skipping and freezing problems.

Any ideas? I'm pretty fed up.

UPDATE: So it just did it again and I remembered a few more things. Just playing along, and it suddenly stops as if I paused it, but I noticed that it always stops after I've done some action on another part of the machine, i.e. send a message with Messages, or open a Dropbox file, or open a folder, add a Safari tab, etc. Weird.

The window that pops up all the time says "The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. The disk could not be read from or written to." That message will keep coming up until you go nearly bonkers so I just hit the "Do not warn me again" box and dust off my old AM radio set. 🙂

If after trying a new iTunes library and the SD out of your computer problems continue , I would recommend taking her to a support center and they give you a solution.

I take my computer and leave it with them to revise it exhaustively .

Since they told me that something was failing with my data, and restored .

Problems continued That's when they took the SECT to keep the computer .

Would prove this before proceeding with technical support :

- Take out your SD memory machine ( With iTunes closed).

- Open iTunes while holding the key ( option - alt ) .

- After you create a new library ( in the location that suits you without conflict with your original library ) .

You should have an iTunes with nothing added or download a few songs from iTunes and testing.

If this works , maybe your library or your SD memory have some problem .

If you can not , try this also if not already did before ...

You can also try repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility .

Reset the PRAM ( When you start your mac press the command key + option + p + r )

You hear the beep three times and then let it start normally .

If none of these works you should take you to specialized technical support as it may be a hardware problem if you are still under warranty luck, and if not, I wish you luck .

I hope this is resolved for all, greetings and hope I was of some help.

Most of us have been having this problem since October, and have tried all these methods. I've tried full delete, including my library, removed ALL itunes program files. The clean install froze on opening, just like before.

Several people with this issue have gone to the genius bar and had their entire systems erased and restored, with no resolution. This is a Mavericks issue that seems to be affecting certain users, predominately older Macbook Airs.

Despite the massive size of the thread, we have yet to hear from any apple people (unless there's a post I missed?)

I've gotten used to not having itunes now, but I certainly hope Apple realizes that if I can't get iTunes to work, that means I'm not buying stuff in the iTunes Store. If they don't care about bugs, they should care about revenue.

You're Absolutely right, the truth That I also felt annoyed when i show up at the genius bar only restored, and Believe That the problem was solved but it is not.

Look I do not think it's Mavericks by This problem I started with my Mountain Lion and upgrading to Mavericks thought it would be solved and what did not.

My brother has another macbook and the Problem with the no-show, DESPITE it having "cloned" my library.

Then something strange happens, as the test hardware That They do not yield results. They (obviously) are software problems but obviously it is not.

If this time I go for my machine and the problem I will demand Continues They give me another computer since I've been more than two months without being able to use my machine, or possibly a refund.

Greetings, I think you should do the same and the more people are presented with the same error, but will soon be able to accept it, even if it is very annoying as you feel ignored.

Greetings.

I don't know about this mystery. I have a Mac Mini Late 2012 running OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 and iTunes 11.1.2 and in one day, iTunes can't be open (It opened, but it stuck with 'Beach Ball' cursor). I force close them (Command-Opt-Shift-Esc) and send report to Apple

After this, I Force Restart my Mac (Command-Ctrl-Power) and then iTunes automatically opened. But in this step, iTunes now working.

I suggest you try restart your Mac and after it Restart, suddenly open iTunes. It's working?

Another solution?

It dosen't work with Safe Mode. I have a same problem with my Mac Mini Late 2012 running OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 and iTunes 11.1.2 and I suggest you to Force Close iTunes and Force Restart your Mac. To Force Restart your Mac, Press Command-Option-Power button. After it starts up, suddenly open iTunes. I try this solution and it's work for me. The iTunes now doesn't stuck again with 'Beach ball' cursor.

Do you have another solution?

Jan 6, 2014 7:49 PM in response to Meowcat

I am having the same issue as the others, and I will list the steps I have taken.

First my setup: OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), Late 2012 Mac Mini 2.6GHz i7 16GB (3rd Party Memory) 1TB Fusion Drive (Factory/Apple installed) Music Files stored on 500GB WD Passport External Drive, iTunes library stored on internal 1TB Fusion drive. Running iTunes 11.0.4 11.1, 11.1.2, 11.1.3 (I have had the same issues with all 4 releases)

The problems began when I attempted to add a ripped movie file (legitimately purchased dvd's that i would like to convert to .mp4 or .m4v files to be used/streamed to Apple TV since i no longer own a DVD player) to my itunes library. The file would show copying 1 of 1 to itunes library, then would freeze at some point, becoming completely unresponsive. Leaving itunes running would not solve the issue. Force quitting itunes would cause me to be unable to reopen itunes. I would also not be able to restart my computer through soft-reset (file, shut down or restart) methods. Instead I would be given a gray screen, and the computer would just hang. I would also not be able to relaunch finder. The relaunch would hang. So I am forced to hard reset my Mac mini (holding down the power button on the unit to power down the unit, then hitting power again to power it up. Itunes would also freeze and become entirely unresponsive with no recovery when i selected all my movies files and tried to change their sorting from "home videos" to "movies"

Things I have tried without success:

reinstalling mavericks over existing OS using backed up itunes library

reinstalling mavericks over existing OS using newly built itunes library

Clean install of mavericks and backed up/restored itunes library (post migration assistant to recover apps only)

Clean install of mavericks and newly built itunes library (post migration assistant to recover apps only)

Clean install of mavericks and backed up/restored itunes library (pre migration assistant)

Clean install of mavericks and newly built itunes library (pre migration assistant)

downgrading OS to Mountain lion 10.8.5 with newly built itunes library

downgrading OS to Mountain lion 10.8.5 with backed up/restored itunes library

tried moving all media files to internal fusion hard drive

deleted itunes entirely using terminal, and reinstalled version 11.1 from an exisiting time machine backup

if you're losing count, that's 6 clean installs counting the downgrade to 10.8.5 9 (each time using disk utility to erase the hard drive then installing the new OS on top of the empty drive).

additionally i have:

run memory test overnight using memtest86 with no errors.

verified and repaired disk permissions on both my internal hard drive and the external drive the music/video files are located on

run apple's hardware diagnostic test multiple times showing no failures

disconnected all other drives/storage/etc and connected only the passport drive directly to the computer.

i am also unable to boot into safe mode (reboot and hold shift until the progress bar shows, release shift, a few moments later computer restarts on it's own and boots in normal mode)

i've also documented my issues in the following thread on macrumors:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1687810&page=2

i have a genius appointment tomorrow, but not expecting much. i will however be demanding a fix, since i spent $1500 on my Mac mini, and now it's virtually useless as a media server for Apple TV, which is part of my intent in purchasing it.
