Mavericks causing problems with scrolling and Mission Control

I am running a late 2012 (December) MacBook Pro 15" and have just installed the new Mavericks OS X. Since the new update my laptop has been suffering from certain graphical issues. For example...

When scrolling down any page, the letters will blur at the top of the screen and not the bottom.
When swiping acrross pages in the launchpad, it occasionaly freezes half way between the two.

When I swipe up with four fingers to access mission control, the screen becomes very sluggish. Swiping back down (or clicking a tab) is even worse, causing slow "laggy" animations.

I am not great with computers so any help would be greatly appreciated! In my opinion this should not be happening to a laptop that's under a year old, my impressions of Mavericks so far have not been good.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Hi this is going to sound really odd, however I have found a temporary fix to this problem. I stumbled accross it on this forum post:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5467590?answerId=23578216022#23578216022

Basically my screen was flickering when scrolling, so I was recommneded to open a graphically intense program (AutoCAD) and it stopped the flickering, and mission control was back to speed. Then I read a more permanent fix was to keep the scroll bar visible at all times. Just need to reboot and see if it works!

I had the same issue. I thought that being a mission control issue it might have to do with an app I opened a while ago so I opened a few apps that I rarely use (iMovie, AutoCad) and that fixed it. Previously the same night I cleaned my computer with Onyx, but that didn't seem to help. After opening and closing iMovie and Autocad, mission control started being butter smooth and everything went to normal.

Turns out my issues were caused by Tanslucent Blur being enabled for Terminal.app windows: any time a Terminal window was open, scrolling/animations in other apps became slow. Quitting Terminal.app or disabling the Blur effect under its Preferences solved the issue for me completely (for now).

I would suggest this means that other effects in other apps can also theoretically be causing similar problems. For example I saw the same effect when some lecture videos (HTML5/Flash) were playing on Coursera.org in Safari (and Chrome, IIRC).

Greetings, all.

In my case, the problems with Mavericks waking from sleep are related to the screen saver. I stumbled across this soution by accident because one of my hot corners is set to activate the screen saver.

If your screen is not blank but Mission Control is not working after Mavericks wakes from sleep, activate your screen saver manually. You can do this by configuring a hot corner to activate your screen saver, or you can to system preferences / Desktop & Screen Saver and click no preview. After the screen saver is started, deactivate it as you would normally by moving the cursor or hitting a key on the keyboard. Mission Control will now work correctly (at least in my experience). This works every time.

If your screen goes blank after Mavericks wakes from sleep, you can reactivate the screen by activating your screen saver with a hot corner movement. Of course, this means that you need to have one of your hot corners already set to activate the screen saver.

I suspect that this issue will be addressed in a system update before long.

Good luck.

Well, after trying almost everything, my last choice would have been reinstaling everything or come back to Windows (No please!!), the Autocad Solution worked for me. However, every time I restarted the OS the flickering problem would come back and I had to launch Autocad again.

A more durable solution was to delete this file, as discussed on the forum post scottn90 had informed (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5467590?answerId=23578216022#23578216022):

1. Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist

(You can find Library in the Go menu only when you hold down the option key--it's hidden.)

2. Shutdown

3. Startup

I just hope apple comes with a final solution for this in the next upgrades...
