Mavericks causing problems with scrolling and Mission Control

I am running a late 2012 (December) MacBook Pro 15" and have just installed the new Mavericks OS X. Since the new update my laptop has been suffering from certain graphical issues. For example...

When scrolling down any page, the letters will blur at the top of the screen and not the bottom.
When swiping acrross pages in the launchpad, it occasionaly freezes half way between the two.

When I swipe up with four fingers to access mission control, the screen becomes very sluggish. Swiping back down (or clicking a tab) is even worse, causing slow "laggy" animations.

I am not great with computers so any help would be greatly appreciated! In my opinion this should not be happening to a laptop that's under a year old, my impressions of Mavericks so far have not been good.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Hi Steve,

Since your Mac is so new you should contact AppleCare and have them diagnose it. One of the steps that they will have you take is to reset the SMC so you might as well do that first.

Read all the steps:

Before Resetting the SMC

Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.

  1. Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
  2. Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
  3. Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
  4. Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

After that, please consider the following. It is not intended to fix anything, but will provide additional information required to advance troubleshooting:

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:

User uploaded file

Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.

It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.

Copy and paste its output in a reply.

Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed" or anything else that may appear in red.

EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

I have a MBP 13" late 2011 and I'm having these same issues (Launch pad, Freezes, jerkiness) after installing Mavericks.

I first did an upgrade from Lion and noticed the problems and decided to do a clean install and I still have these issues.

Another strange issue was during the fresh install my Macbook froze at the "Set Time and Region" screen on initial boot up and I had to do a hard reset to get it to boot up for the first time.

I still have this problem: even after I've done all steps that John Galt listed.

What can I do???

Try removing Soundflower since it has not been updated in a very long time. Follow these instructions from its developer's website:

http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/

There is a short video explaining how to uninstall it. If uninstalling it does not help, and you really need it, you can always reinstall it again from the developer's website.

If that does not help please start a new Discussion because there will be other things to check.

I had a similar problem. I have a 27" iMac (Late 2012) and after installing Mavericks, I wasn't able to scroll using my Magic Mouse in Calendar, or any broswers--Safari, Chrome, and Firefox--even after setting my scrollbars to appear "always." I also wasn't able to access Dashboard with a 2 finger swipe or Mission Control with a double tap.

I called Apple Care and told the advisor about the threads that suggested resetting the PRAM or SMC. But he suggested that before we try that, I should restart my computer while keeping the "Reopen windows when logging back in" box unchecked. It solved my problem instantly, and I haven't had trouble scrolling anywhere since!!
