Unable to connect to network printer

After installing Mavericks i cannot print anymore on my network printer.

The printer has connected to a Windows XP pc, i see it under settings Windows printer but when i launch a print the printer goes into pause state. The message i see is "unable to connect to printer".

I had this connection since Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion and it has always worked.

I have this exact same problem, and I am running 10.9.2. I did a fresh Mavericks installation several months ago and my printer setup was working fine all this time. (I am NOT running any Windows computers. Just MacBook Pro's running the latest Mavericks.)

Recently I upgraded to 10.9.2 and now I can no longer print to my networked printer. I have rebooted my machine, I have rebooted the printer (HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A), I have redone the wireless setup on the printer, I have tried removing and re-adding the printer, but NOTHING WORKED!

This is EXTREMELY frustrating. Both my laptop and my printer are connected to the same network, but my OSX is not able to find the printer.

Need a solution! :-(

Could I suggest that you download the Mavericks 10.9.2 installer 1.3.40) and Create an installer onto a 8Gb USB 3.0 Thumb drive and install it over the top of your current installation. This often cures problems that defy all logic. Most people are reporting that 10.9.2 cures this problem so I would respectfully suggest this approach is worth a try. Also, of course, make sure you have downloaded the very latest drivers from your printer manufacturer and even try deleting the printer and re-adding it, maybe trying bonjour or TCPI/P and see if one of themworks for you. Hope this helps

The only thing that seems to work reliably is waking all computers from sleep, and that is not a solution.

The setting in Settings to wake on network access seems to not work as intended. This is true for me, even after installing OSX 10.9.2 and deleting and re- creating printers, with the latest printer driver from the manufacturer.

I am still frustrated! This used to work, and now it does not.

Yesterday my printer (HP 3050) was working fine. In fact, I printed a page- no problem, and went to print another page and I got an error message "79" telling me to turn the printer on and off again. I did and nothing changed- still won't print.

It also suggested not plugging the printer into a surge protect bar, it's worked plugged in to a surge protect bar for the last 6 years.

The problem is with the Mac, not the printer. My husband's dell computer can print on this printer no problem.

I checked the HP website to see if there were new drivers, but I couldn't find any.

I'm currently running OS 10.8.5 and I see that there is 10.9.2 out there, with 22 reviews- 14 of which are 1 star... so, I"m reluctant to run the upgrade, although I see some people in other posts have had success with the upgrade.

Dear Jl Jl,

Your problem sounds like a hardware issue to me. I assume you are using the USB port on your MacBook to connect to the printer. While I haven't had a problem with my Macbook USB ports I have on other machines. If the power level at the USB port is a bit marginal you can get your sort of problem. Three things you can try:

1. Connect to the other MacBook USB port

2. Connect the printer via a powered USB hub

3. If you can network the Dell and the Macbook it would be worth connecting the printer to the Dell, sharing the printer and try to print from the MacBook via the Dell

Despite popular belief some electronics componets can age especialy in power supplies so just because something worked in the past doesn't discount a hardware issue now.

Thanks IanD1953

The upgrade to Maverick fixed the printer problem.

Now... to see what fall-out there is from Maverick- hopefully all is well, although I have noticed it doesn't seem to like one of the Mac fonts now that I used as a header in a document- it's all garboly goop.

Thanks for your suggestion IanD
