Unable to connect to network printer

After installing Mavericks i cannot print anymore on my network printer.

The printer has connected to a Windows XP pc, i see it under settings Windows printer but when i launch a print the printer goes into pause state. The message i see is "unable to connect to printer".

I had this connection since Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion and it has always worked.

I am on Yosemite but am having similar printer problems to others here. I recently changed from windows laptop to a macbook pro and I am unable to print to my HP D2300 which is connected to my Windows PC running XP SP3. I have installed the printer on my mac suing the lpd as described earlier in this post. I can send a print to the printer and from the mac end it looks like all is sent fine. When I view the print queue on my windows pc the print i sent from mac is shown in the queue with an "Error - Printing" status. I cannot get past this stage and its driving me nuts!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am convinced that this problem is a result of wi-fi connection of the Macbook to the network. I've had similar problems through all iterations of Apple operating systems. The only way I've found to solve this is to do the following:

a) Set a static IP address on the printer.

b) Restart the network router and hubs.

c) Add the printer using LPD and the static IP address.

d) If problems arise in the future, simply restart network router and hubs.
