first go to preferences/network....then at the bottom choose assist and the choose assistant.....then press continue for the first time then if using lan choose the last option...then press continue twice and then will ask your password for modification..... then just close it.....this boosted my net to somting like 70 kb/s from 19kb/...it worked for me out of luck just try it..

In the end, the solution from CTaztec fixed it for me (around 5 posts before this one),

I did exactly what was instructed, except for point 3 (changing of MTU);

I overlooked that point and jumped to the terminal instructions which solved the issue immediately after the last command so there was no need to change the MTU.

I have had the same issue once before and then the removal of library/preferences/SystemConfiguration directory did the trick. Strange.

Rather bizar problem, network worked for weeks in a row without a problem and suddenly just stopped working all together without any apparant cause. 😟

Same issue for me, 27" 2011 imac, went from SL to Mavericks. When using the internet Safari keeps hanging up. Turning off wifi, then turning back on gets it working again but sometimes just for a few minutes. Router is six feet away and our two iphones, ipad and apple tv work fine. I downloaded Chrome just to research this problem! I just tried re setting up the network as suggested by Pieter De Jong above, followed his steps. Don't know if it solved my problem yet but wow is Safari way faster now! Hopefully that is all Mav wanted!

My wifi is working now!

Wifi was dropping for me every five minutes or less, and I'd have to click it on and off again to get it back.

Due to multiple issues with the update, I made a couple of back ups, formatted my drive and clean installed Mavericks. Opened a browser and wham, my wifi dropped.

So I called Telus, my internet provider. They changed my wifi encryption from WPA to WEP. Wifi works now.

I don't know the details exactly, but WEP I believe is less secure, but anyway, this was a solution to my wifi woes.

so I've been having the same problem with my iMac 12,1 connected via wifi to my old Airport Extreme. Network suddenly drops and have to turn my network off and on to reconnect. BIG BUMMER, huge waste of time.

But I also have MBP retina (Mavericks), an iPad Air and an iPhone 5 on my wireless network and they never drop their connection. So it only happens on my iMac.

And I've done everything: reset SMC, zap pRAM, rebuild location, dump /Library/System Configuration folder, reinstalled Mavericks by downloading the install file and creating an install USB using Diskmaker X—wouldn't download on the iMac but did on the MBP. My wifi worked great for one day. Then it was back to its bad behavior and this morning it was frightful.

NOTHING helped, not even tearing my hair out. Oh, and I called Apple and they didn't listen too hard but suggested resetting SMC. BIG FAT ZERO HELP.

But this morning after reading templeofdoom, I changed the encryption on my router to WPA/WPA2 Personal from WPA2 Personal and so far the wifi on the iMac hasn't been bricked.

So thanks so much for the sugestion. Keeping my fingers crossed that the encryption change works for me: I will keep you posted.

I also have the same issues on my macbook pro. Installed Mavericks and I am constantly losing connection. every time, I need to reboot my laptop. Thought it was Safari, but Firefox is doing the same. Never had this issue prior to install of Mavericks. I have this problem with either wifi or LAN cable.

I recently had a visit to the Genius Bar, to hopefully rectify this problem. I explained all of the symptoms to the Genius and he set to work, saying that he knew exactly what the problem was. He was really quite quick and precise; telling me that I had had some conflicting settings in my system library, which he had removed; and that when I got home my MacBook would not recognise my router and would effectively be seeing for the first time. All I would have to do then would be pair them up and everything would be rosy.

I got home, opened the lid. My MacBook immediately recognised my router, hooked up to it; and instantly dropped it again. Same ol' same ol'. I had a follow-up eMail from Apple. "you recently had a Genius Bar visit. How did it go?" etc. I replied; telling them that it hadn't gone well and that I was now no better off than I had been before. Since then, nothing.😟

That is revealing that the prob does not occur with Mountain Lion. I too started to have this prob right after the latest Mavericks update.

After extensive testing with my ISP and confirming with them and speed test that my broadband speed is normal I am of the opinion that the latest Mavericks update is affecting my internet connection on both wireless or ethernet.

However I had been holding on to downgrading to Mountain Lion as my final solution if everything went totally pear shaped....It just has with this net prob.

BUT - Apparently a new computer that came with Mavericks factory installed cannot have Mountain Lion installed on it…and I have a new computer, folks.

So apparently I just paid $3,500 for a new computer that can’t even hold a stable net connection and has multiple other probs. This has been my worst experience with a Mac Os ever. The probs I have had do not fall into the usual upgrade small glitches basket for a Mac.

I am never ever buying a Mac again (been using one for 30 years) if Apple does’t release an update that fixes all this in the next few weeks…

I really hope someone, the cleaner perhaps even, is reading this at Apple.... enough is enough.

I am sorry if you think I am being too negative but I feel totally betrayed by the computer company whom I always thought was the best (and I am now too poor to buy another alternative that actually is trouble free)

The mysterious case of the maddening dropped wifi. This falls under odd solutions but it's worth a look. I tried almost three weeks of everything I found in the forums from deleting networks, keychains and files, Ethernet only, disabling bluetooth, to totally wiping my iMac and doing a fresh install. I updated the firmware on a 4 month old Asus router, had two visits from the cable company and a somewhat inpatient exchange with Apple tech level 2 (You're my guy now but don't work on Wednesday and Thursday and today is Tuesday???).

SOLUTION.

An aging 2.4Ghz (frequency look familiar?) cordless phone was failing. My old Windows HP and router never had the juice to trip the connection. Phone replaced with a new Panasonic dect 6.0. Wifi stable since.

I feel your frustration. I truly hope this helps someone.
