I have met the same problem too!

Mine is also the new macbook pro Haswell.

I have been using my macbook for 2 days.

And I have encountered sudden freeze for 4 times!

The keyboard and the trackpad are unresponsive.

But actually the system is working and the apps are working.

And the power button can actually work.

So every time I met this problem,I long press the power button and make it restart.

And then everything is okay.

Somtimes ,if you wait for 10~15 min, the keyboard and the trackpad will start working again.

When the second time I met this problem, I decided to go to the apple store for help.

But after several mins, it works again.

It is very annoying that the system suddenly freeze when you are busy working on the documents.

And it causes damage that you force to shut down the macbook.

I think it is a software problem?

Hope Apple can release some updates to solve this problem soon!

Just had the same thing right now, never experienced it first time round. However symptoms are identical.

Keyboard and trackpad inoperative. Had a vpn open and timer was still ticking along. Couldn't do anything. As soon as pressed and held the power button, the menu came up asking me what I wanted to do etc.

If it happens again, I'll try an external keyboard. Never experienced anything more than a very brief freeze.

This freeze problem continues 1 year after I originally bought the computer. Apple replaced the machine in June and the replaced machine now shows all the same issues. They are ignoring me but I hope consumers take note and teach apple that you cannot sell a faulty machine and walk away from the problem. If you are a professional musician forget about getting anything apple made after 2013! Steve's GONE!

Nov 17, 2014 7:00 AM in response to I am that

had the same problems for months. Luckily I brought it in before the warranty expired a couple times. But then found out if I just let the battery run out and then put in the charger it would work again. But what a pain. Last week it finally just turned off and couldn't get it to turn back on again. Took to Apple store and they said that since I had brought it in a couple times for power issues, that they would cover it. Thank goodness, because this would have been my last first and last Macbook. They ended up replacing the board and top case w/battery. I believe it was close to $800 had I not brought it in before. I hope Apple products don't all start going out about the time the Warranty does.

Nov 18, 2014 10:08 PM in response to sridhar_s

After the upgrade to Maverick it did not happen again but then the whole

computer went out and Apple replaced the board and power. As I mentioned

too they covered the whole bill since I had brought it in for the power

issues before the warranty was up. I have only had it back for a week now

so time will tell.

I didn't know this forum existed, but I'd like to share my experience... I'll be brief.

I got in December 2013 my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) -2 GHz Intel Core i7. I was really happy about it until I started having issues with my keyboard and touchpad.... until one day in Aug 2014, there was no come back and no work arounds. Took it to apple store and this is what they had to do:

(in case you don't read the whole message --> Conclusion, I hope you have warranty, apple customer service insist you need to have warranty with this product and you'll definitely need it. I don't have it, but I live in Quebec, I'm already starting a small claim court for this product, before next time H/W screws up again, which I smell it will happen soon)

This is how they took it in

Total $ 498.00 $ 0.00

And this is what they did to repair.

Once they repaired the above, I had another issue with battery (I think they were reusing some parts from other used products) where the power port was not recognizing the battery cable (the orange/green light wouldn't come one, I mean no light at all, therefore the computer wouldn't charge until I couldn't turn on my computer anymore) and I had to bring it again for repair. And they had to change the following

And now, as of TODAY's reply, I'm starting to get the original issue again where the keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive.... But now I don't have the warranty again, and never bought the apple care.... I mean, why would you buy apple care if you're buying top notch computer, right?? right??.....

I've had major fights with apple customer support, and it was always dead end. They would just say "we understand you sir, this is frustrating. We suggest you buy the apple care"....but because I live in Quebec, and this province (thankfully) has a special protection for costumers, the government currently is helping me to start an action against apple, because if this computer doesn't pass the three year normal operation mark, I may get it fixed again or if I'm fortunate, I may even get the money back. But again, I've had major headaches with this laptop. So I suggest, for those buying new laptops, think again and for those who already have these laptops and are having issues at least start asking the right questions to apple.

FOR SURE IT'S A HARDWARE ISSUE

Good luck!!!!!

Has been happening to me too, on a brand-new (late 2014) 15” retina MBPro, preloaded with Yosemite. Began when I updated Yosemite to 10.10.1 and has continued through 10.10.2 update. Happens mostly with Safari but occasionally with Mail and Solitaire Deluxe. I’ll be typing or navigating and my finger or hand will contact the keypad; the current window twitches left or right as if I’m doing the three-finger swipe and then freezes. The cursor will move; if I’m in a text window I can keep typing but nothing else responds to the cursor, no matter what it is on which I click: menus, icons, buttons. I can back out of each application using cmd-opt-esc and then hitting “enter” first on the “force quit applications” box (clicking on “force quit” does nothing) and then when the confirmation (“do you want to...”) box appears (again, clicking on “force quit” does nothing). I get all the way to “Finder,” and when I hit Enter to “relaunch Finder,” all that happens is that the desktop and “force quit applications” box refresh, with the cursor and all buttons except Enter and power unresponsive. All I can do from there is do a hard reboot by powering off and then back on. And upon reboot, I don’t get the old “It appears your computer was shut down because of a problem” message box, nor any option to contact Apple. No indications of a kernel panic. Going to Console gives me no clue as to what just happened.

Sometimes it happens a few times a day, sometimes every 2-3 days. Never happens when using a wireless USB mouse, but who wants to tie up a USB port? I tried EVERY suggestion given in these threads: PRAM and MSC resets, Apple Diagnostics, Safe Mode, Disk Utility, reinstall OS X. No effect whatsoever. Contacted Apple Care to chat online--took over 1/2 hr and the tech was ultimately stumped. He’d never heard of this issue, nor had the Genius to whom I brought the computer at the Apple Store yesterday. We tried to reproduce the problem but couldn’t. He reset the MSC and suggested I see if the problem recurred--and if it did, next time I had an available week without needing the computer, to bring it back to the store to be shipped to the factory in Texas so they could investigate. He had no idea whether it’s a software, input device controller, defective keypad or connection or (as I strongly suspect) a firmware problem that Apple has yet to recognize, let alone be able to solve.

Later last evening it happened again. I just installed the latest Safari update (8.0.4), but I doubt that’ll fix it. And I doubt that even giving me a new machine will solve it. It fries me, BTW, that Apple replaces defective machines with the exact models that malfunctioned, rather than the next (perhaps improved) iteration!

Mar 17, 2015 5:12 PM in response to Sandra Andina1

Just happened again when I tried to reproduce the problem--three-finger-swiped right to expose just the desktop; then when I swiped left to return to Safari, the screen froze mid-swipe. Cursor moved but did nothing--couldn’t scroll or even close windows because the upper left “traffic light” buttons were unresponsive; trying to swipe again either way was futile. I noticed screen animations on another Safari window beneath continuing to change.

This time, I simply put the computer to sleep by closing the lid, waiting 1 min. and reopening. The screen was still frozen. Tried to swipe again and at first nothing happened; then a second later, the windows came to life, sprang back to their current position, from where I’m typing this. MUST be the keypad firmware!!!!!

Mar 17, 2015 9:02 PM in response to Sandra Andina1

Reproduced the problem again by repeatedly swiping till screen locked. Closed lid to sleep, waited half a minute, opened lid, woke it up, then repeatedly swiped till screen responded again. Following is the Console text from the time just before lockup till shortly after back-to-normal. (The last entry before the beginning of this log I’m posting was a full three minutes before I attempted to induce the lockup. First and last log lines may provide the clue? I am bolding suspicious messages. Note--I have NO idea how to write or interpret code; sorry for the length, but it spans less than a minute, since the system clock at the top right menu of my desktop registers only hours and minutes, not seconds (much less milliseconds):

Note the “Error 9 on socket:” it seemed to have occurred after earlier lockups. Are other possible telltale phrases “no worthy mechs found,” and the ones I bolded?

Sandra,

Not sure what you hope to gain by posting here, but just so you know the only way you can possibly resolve your problem is by contacting Apple, which you cannot do here. Judging by the discussions size and when it started, there are clearly many other users who share your frustration and after all this time and all these words, nobody has been able to recommend a solution so I'd have to guess there is close to zero chance of your receiving any meaningful help here. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news and I certainly wish I could help.

Thanks, but I HAVE contacted Apple--by phone, online AppleCare chat, and in person at the Genius Bar. I posted the Console logs in the hope that someone around here with deeper knowledge of UNIX code and what it might reveal about hardware behavior might glean a clue, one that seems to have eluded the Geniuses and AppleCare support techs to date. If they can suss out the cause of the problem, perhaps they can devise a solution--and the result could help MANY more folks than just me.

Actually, none of that is UNIX code, but it's just as difficult to understand to most of us untrained users. The Console output is mostly informational in nature. The system.log is where the majority of the error conditions are described and if you look under diagnostic reports you might be able to locate a hang or crash report that occurred at the time it locked up. That would be the most beneficial.

Possible. The discovered process is new to Yosemite and replaces the mDNSResponder process that served OS X fairly well for over twelve years. There has been speculation that it is responsible for a number of mysterious networking problems. One technical article lists these issues as possibly being cause by it:

  • Random failures to resolve DNS names
  • Duplicate machine names
  • Very inconsistent wake on demand
  • Impossible to reach services running on a Mac from the outside
  • Very flakey Wide Area Bonjour registration

There are efforts to resolve all of these, but none would seem to be related to what you are seeing.

The biggest problem with posting here is that almost nobody that does troubleshooting is still monitoring this thread way too long thread. You will always get a lot more help faster if you start your own discussion and wait for the experts to drop by and ask you for diagnostic information. If you get a solution, you can always return and let everybody know, but posting here is mostly preaching to the choir. Not picking on you at all, it's just the way this forum works best.
