I have met the same problem too!

Mine is also the new macbook pro Haswell.

I have been using my macbook for 2 days.

And I have encountered sudden freeze for 4 times!

The keyboard and the trackpad are unresponsive.

But actually the system is working and the apps are working.

And the power button can actually work.

So every time I met this problem,I long press the power button and make it restart.

And then everything is okay.

Somtimes ,if you wait for 10~15 min, the keyboard and the trackpad will start working again.

When the second time I met this problem, I decided to go to the apple store for help.

But after several mins, it works again.

It is very annoying that the system suddenly freeze when you are busy working on the documents.

And it causes damage that you force to shut down the macbook.

I think it is a software problem?

Hope Apple can release some updates to solve this problem soon!

Having said mine hadn't frozen after the SMC reset it has now done it again...

However for anyone losing work, another tip, I actually just closed the lid for a bit, went and made something to eat then came back 10 minutes later, opened the lid and all was fine. No work lost so don't rush to turn it straight off

It's very annoying and I'm probably going to return mine for a refund as I don't believe in paying premium prices for stuff that lacks quality. For sure this could well be a software issue and Apple may eventually get round to fixing it, but if they don't and the opportunity to return disappears I don't want to be left with a laptop that randomly freezes two or three times a day for the next 3 years until I change it again.

CHRIS,

GOOD point! its a def software issue. Yes you could return urs with 14 days but i will be waiting for 1 more week. And closing the lid and coming back after a while solves the problem also. From all of the post i have become aware that, MULTITASKING leads to freeze. I did not have any issues yet. 24 hrs passed! But still it can happen.

Cheers,

I've still only had one freeze on mine, and that was whilst doing a software download. Have any of you guys had this freeze whilst not doing a software download/app download or software update?

Not sure if it's a related problem but I noticed on a couple of occasions that when I am downloading software and it's showing in the 'download stack', the download indicator bar gets to the end but stays there for a while, if you click on it, it then starts the download again from the beginning. Being a new Mac user, I'm not sure if this is a fault or just the way it is?

It would be nice if at least Apple acknowledged the issue, so we wouldn't have to worry about the 15 days limit. It's a problem in all the branch, must be solved without any cost to the user and a proper appologise for the inconvenience.

If it's a software problem, the faster it's solved the better. If it's the hardware, it should be added to the Exchange and Rapair Extension Program.

Hi all,

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 13 from a local Apple reseller today and I am experiencing the same problem. It has occured once until now, but it's exactly as you all describe. I guess this is a software problem, a hardware problem would probably lock up the machine or would at least persist until you reset the machine (and not be gone after putting the computer to sleep and waiting a little bit). But of course that's only my guess.

BTW, did anyone experience this problem when using Windows via BootCamp ? Would be worth a try to work with a Windows installation for some time to see if it also occurs in Windows - if it does, it could after all be a hardware issue.

My 13" rMBP froze twice yesterday but has not frozen yet today. I called Apple Technical Support and after I told them the issue they said they never heard of it happen before to the new rMBP's, which I find very hard to believe. The reception was bad and we got cut-off. I called them back but they closed at 6pm (GMT) so I will try again on Monday.

Same issue here (keyboard and trackpad becoming unresponsive). Happened twice within the first 24 hour of buying my MBP (13 inch Haswell, midrange model with 256 gb of storage). Both times, I wasn't doing anyhting special, just browsing the web. I am also getting the following message in the system log console every few minutes, but I am not sure if it's related to the problem:

"The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 5 of Hub at 0x14000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup"

Already filed a bug report with Apple, but I will call AppleCare the next time it happens. I really don't want to have to return it to the store, so I hope Apple acknoweledges (and fixes) this issue soon!
