"Playback error Tap to retry" while using youtube, Internet videos dont work and Siri doesn't work

So I have an iPad mini 16GB running iOS 7.0.3

These are the issues I face:

  • "Playback error Tap to retry" in the YouTube app
  • Videos shared on Facebook don't play
  • Videos in Safari dont play (the videos being HTML5)
  • Siri never connects

I would like to add that when I do hit a video to play, the video area is black (no play/volume controls) but the little loading circle by the wifi icon is spinning as if it is loading. I have tried waiting for a long time for them to load and see if anything happens, but still nothing

This is what I have tried so far:

  • Reinstall youtube app
  • Home+Power button till reboot
  • Settings > General settings > Reset > Reset Network Settings
  • Settings > General settings > Reset > Reset All Settings
  • Settings > General settings > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
  • Settings > Safari > Clear cookies and Data
  • DFU mode then Restore using iTunes (I have tried both restoring from a backup and setting it up as a new iPad, still no dice)

I would also like to add that other videos do work, I can record video with my camera and play it back with no issues too

Hello lowed,

Have you tried the other steps I mentioned before? After doing research, I found that many people just updated their modem firmware and it solved the issue, it seemed to be with this modem model quite often, the ZyXel VMG3312. Check what model your modem is and just google how to update the firmware. It shouldn't be difficult and won't take more than 5 mins

Before going down the root to update modem firmware. Do this...

The answer to my problem was to change the DNS server number (should have done this first when the "playback error" persisted.:/). Take a screenshot of your original DNS number for future necessity, then change it to OpenDNS..or google DNS...I used google DNS...for complete & thorough instructions..follow this site:--> http://www.macinstruct.com/node/558

it solved the problem completely.

THANKS SHAISHEL!! I got a new iPhone 6 Plus a month ago, and the YouTube app hasn't worked right for pretty much the entire time. Always a "Playback error Tap to retry", especially on my wifi at home, and about half the time when traveling. I changed the Settings>wifi>DNS to 8.8.8.8 like you said, and it instantly started working! I read multiple forums, but only your post had the answer. Maybe people like you should work for Apple, because any problem I have I usually have to find the answer from another user in Support Communities, not once from an Apple employee posting the answer = frustrating
