ITunes 11.1.2 no longer has a book tab

Just updated to ITunes 11.1.2 and the books tab is no longer there. There is no option in preferences for books only audiobooks. I assume this is related to Mavericks installing IBooks. How do I get my books into Itunes to sync them with my Ipad

G5, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Here is a very odd fix.

Since iTunes no longer shows books, connect your iphone or ipad to itunes

Expand to the area where you have books, make sure you can see all the existing pdf/epub

Now simply drag and drop your epub files on your computer from finder to this area

This will transfer this directly to your phone but will not show up on itunes books window (Under iphone)

Good luck.

PS If you keep the ibooks app open on your iphone you will be able to see the file being transferred.

With the introduction to the new iBooks with Mavericks, Apple did a big change in how to import books.

Not that complicated since you get the know how. Here it goes:

Open iBooks, Click File, select "Add to Library"

Now open iTunes and when selecting your device, iPhone or iPad, select Books, there you should see all PDF and ePub files.

True.

In other words - the "books" tab in iTunes will come back as soon as you add books to ibooks on the mac (I think that only works as long as those books aren't purchased at the iBooks store though)

This will also sync ebooks and PDFs which where on your iPad or iPhone before and wouldn't sync with iTunes.

Instead of using the iBooks menu you can also just drag&drop your ebooks from finder into ibooks on your mac.

Hey Matt7sd,

The trick is to load all your books into iBooks on your Mac first (can't tell you how it works in case your are on a PC)

You'll probably find that your books from the iBooks store are already there. Just add the other ones into this library, either by drag&drop or by using the menu. Once added you'll get a "books" tab in iTunes where you can choose to synchronize your books to attached idevices.

With iBooks in use can you now delete pdfs directly in iTunes while still keeping them in iBooks? Did the book category reappear in iTunes? I ask because I recently migrated to a Mac after years of using PCs and I was absolutely horrified when I was no longer able to manage my pdfs through iTunes. First my pdfs didn't show up in iTunes at all until I found the post that explained how to get the pdfs in iBooks to sync with iTunes. But that made things even worse because once iBooks was activated the book category disappeared from iTunes and the only way to remove pdfs from iTunes was to delete them from my hard drive. This was not an acceptable situation.

I constantly add and remove pdfs from iTunes as I have lots of travel docs and only wants those relevant to ongoing trips on my iPad at any one time. Plus I have lots of pdfs I keep for archival purposes that I don't want cluttering up my iPad. I ended up spending hours searching this forum until I found out how to get rid of iBooks from my Mac. Once tht was done, the books category reappeared in iTunes.

It would be nice to have iBooks on the Mac, but I can live without it in order to be able to manually manage books and pdfs via iTunes.

Yes, this is how it works when iBooks is controlling what shows up in iTunes. But I literally have hundreds --and the number is ever increasing-- of PDFs. And I only want a fraction of these on iPad at any one time. In iTunes you get this awkward large icon view that allows you to check or uncheck books one at a time during the sync process. You can see a dozen books at a time with a large monitor. If I got really, really, really rigorous with my PDF naming conventions then it would probably only take an extra hour or so ever time I synced my iPad to ensure I had only the PDFs I needed for the upcoming trip and wasn't missing any important ones. This is not a workable solution. So iBooks will stay off my Mac as long as it controls which PDFs appear in iTunes.

I have iTunes 11.4 (18) and apparently the Books button is still gone. I have been trying to get a purchased iBook (purchased 3 times already) on to my new iPhone 5S. The book is already listed in my purchased books on my Mac book air in iBooks. But there seems to be no way to sync iBooks with my iPhone. All the other books are synced. But this one book does not sync. I wish Apple would have left things alone when they used to work in iTunes.

I was having the same problem with iTunes 11.4. After doing a search, I found that iBooks is now a separate app that you can open and manage your books from there. Here's more information: Frequently asked questions about iBooks.

Here's the important info that will hopefully help you:

Can I download books from other websites?

Yes, you can download EPUB and PDF files on your Mac or PC. To add them to your iTunes library, choose File > Add to Library, or drag the EPUB or PDF file to the Books library on your computer. If you're using OS X Mavericks or later, you can add them to your library in iBooks. To read your books, sync them to your device. The books must be in one of the above supported formats.

Long story short: add your book(s) to the iBooks app. Once uploaded in, go back to iTunes, click on your device, then head to the Books tab. You'll see that your newly uploaded books are now up. Choose which books you want to upload to your device and hit Sync. The books should now be on your device.... after such a confusing process. I hope iTunes fixes this in their next update. It's such unnecessary steps just to get books on a device.

Hope this helps!
