You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.
You will also need to supply more information.
What OS version are you using?
What application are you using?
What happens when you try to open an e-mail?
Have you tried opening in the Safe Mode?
Hi,
I would go one step further.
This Thread is about the app Messages on a Mac.
The Title miss-informs us that iMessages will not open. iMessages is an Account with the Messages.
Having said that lots of the articles Apple provide about Mail talk about receiving messages as well.
Use Mail on your Mac - Apple Support This talk about starting new Messages (in Mail) and uses the same words as the instruction for the Messages app.
On this page which is where I ended up searching for Mail it show the apps in a list on the left.
https://www.apple.com/uk/support/mac-apps/mail/
You can see Mail and Messages have different icons with the Messages app the next one down from Mail.
This Thread is in Mavericks which is the Name given to an older (not current) version of the Mac OS X (10.9.x).
You post is sufficiently lacking in detail that it could also be about Mail on the iOS device that you might have.

Hi! I have the same problem. I just updated my computer to Sierra. Every time I try to click on the messages app, it won't open. I tried removing it from the dock like you said above but it didn't work. I also clicked get info when I right clicked on the messages app on Finder and my version is 10. How do I fix this?
Hi,
Are you getting the same response from the app in the Applications Folder ?
(it is IN the Applications folder and not a sub folder isn't it ?)
Open the Font Book app and check AppleGothic is present and active. (it is a long way down the list)
Also Helvetica Neue and Lucida Grande as Messages needs these to start and open properly.
