Mavericks and External Hard Drives
After upgrading to Mavericks, when I put my iMac to sleep, the external HD's no longer go to sleep as they did prior to the upgrade. Any ideas as to how to correct this?

Yes, it is checked.
FIrewire or Thunderbolt ext. HD?
FIrewire & Thunder bolt drives are across the board having issues with Mavericks, avoid same until a fix is issued if you can.
many are reporting same, there is a firewire fault and TB HD on external HD from LaCie (Seagate) and from WD especially.
Technicians are looking into it. 😊
Until there is resolution, consider setting up a USB ext. Time machine HD.
Until then consider confining Mavericks use with USB HD.
Ive tested a long line of USB HD on Mavericks, all seem fine.
Thank you for the info. Yes, the drives are LaCie Firewire drives. So, I will wait until there is an appropriate update.
I switched to the USB connection and now the HD sleeps when the iMac sleeps. Thanks for the insight into where the problem originated.
good 😉
I hope you know that USB is much slower than Firewire.
Half the speed of Thunderbolt !
I am experiencing the same issue. I have a G Tech external drive drive connected to the FW800 port of my Thunderbolt Display, and a 2013 MBA connected to the display via Thunderbolt.
It's great to hear that some are resolving the "no sleep" issue by reverting to USB. Personally, I'll wait for Apple to release a fix that actually solves the problem. I don't have interest in sacrificing performance so my drive can sleep.
I have the same problem with a Seagate external FW800 drive and Mavericks. It slept just fine under Mountain Lion. I'm hoping that a fix will be forthcoming, I don't really want to go to USB (2 in this case).
same problem here with iMac and F800 drive Lacie d2 Quadra.
iMac go in sleep mode, but external drive not.
I hope, Apple fix this bug.
Me too. Daisychained FW800 external drives unable to sleep. (Me either, but that's another story.)
Same problem here with an OWC Firewire drive that has always went to sleep when it's unmounted.
Now even when it's unmounted it continues to spin (I can hear it humming).
Until there is resolution, UNPLUG IT , dont let your external drives overheat.
😊
I've been hitting the off button on my OWC Firewire drive a couple times a day now since installing Mavericks.
Kind of annoying to have to do this.
This is one of those things that Apple definitely should have caught before releasing Mavericks.
On a positive note though... virtually everything else (except noticeably Tags... W_F) has been an improvement.
