Mavericks and External Hard Drives

After upgrading to Mavericks, when I put my iMac to sleep, the external HD's no longer go to sleep as they did prior to the upgrade. Any ideas as to how to correct this?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

There are so many pages with people having the same "external drives and FW problem" after upgrading to Mavericks. My LaCie FW800 was working flawlessly. Instead of waisting time answering and justifying your new OS, APPLE JUST FIX IT!

Just had a thought maybe they can't or don' know how to fix it so it's just better to sweep it under the carpet. Eventually it will just go away.
