Mavericks and External Hard Drives
After upgrading to Mavericks, when I put my iMac to sleep, the external HD's no longer go to sleep as they did prior to the upgrade. Any ideas as to how to correct this?

USB drives do work, just slower the FW, I have been using the USB ports also since Mavericks messed up my FW800 port and my Thunerbolt ports have the same issue.
Thanks for the reply.
Just to report I am having the same issue. Tried to disable sleep from the SmartNAVI software )not very helpful=. It seems to be a problem with the OS. Any luck with a solution anyone? It's been more than a year.
OS X 10.9.4 update just went live and I'm updating now. Hope the FW sleep issue will finally be gone! Has anyone else tried 10.9.4 yet?
Updated. No improvement ðŸ˜
I tested it a few minutes ago with the Yosemite beta and a totally clean install.
The problem is still there! :-(
Alas, all hope of a future fix for the Firewire issue may be gone.😟
Make sure you send Apple some feedback on how this issue is still uncorrected despite your clean install, maybe it will be addressed in the next round. (always hate to give up hope)
Just to add one more complain in this issue.
I upgraded to Mavericks from SL less than a week ago. Not clean install. I have a MBP mid 2009 which was working perfectly with all external hard drives I used, including those formatted to work also with Windows. Since the upgrade to Mavericks my External hard drives do not stop spinning ever. The most worrisome is a Verbatim 2T that contains most of my important work and backups. I DO hope this issue is solved asap.
.
Sorry I forgot to mention one thing. I read some where above that USB drives do not suffer of this issue, but I have ONLY have USB external hard drives, so the problems also occurs there.
thanks
My USB3 drive sleeps fine but not FW drive on my Mac Mini (2012) with 10.9.4.
I don't know - this has been going on since Mavericks was released and it still hasn't been fixed.😟 A fix may not be in the works. Here's a link with some details as to a reason why this is occurring Does Apple care if your hard drive burns out?.
it seems that my only way out is to install Montain Lion, where such a problem did not exist. I have to instead of going back to SL because I want to use software that does not run in SL. That means that my free upgrade to Mavericks will cost me a lot of time, nerves, and some euros since I have to buy now ML.
still my complain is there to make the list bigger and maybe get a fix one day.
Jettison works perfectly well for me on my FW800 G-Technology 1 TB drive. I can select only this drive to exhibit the proper behaviour both for sleep and shutdown/restart. I have not attempted with FW400. It's an inexpensive solution:
great with jettison - it works!
Look forward to hear if anyone tried with the official release of Yosemite.
Hello!
I sent my third bug report regarding this problem to Apple via bugreport.apple.com. The first two are only duplicates to closed bugreports. :-(
Maybe I get another reaction this time.
And maybe some people writing in this thread also send a bugreport to Apple. Maybe they react some time.
