audio not working on retina macbook pro 13" (late 2013) after sleep

I have a brand new 13" retina macbook pro (late 2013) running OSX mavericks. The audio stops working after I wake the computer up from sleep.

Things I have already tried:

Putting it to sleep by closing the laptop, or by pressing the power button, or by using the menu option.

Using headphones, both before and after sleep, and plugging in and out afterwards.

Pressing mute or using the menu volume controls

Using the audio MIDI setup

Having programs open, specifically itunes or other AV programs. ie everything has been normal and I've tried it with everything closed.

Restarting the computer does fix the issue but only until I put it to sleep again.

My issues seems to different all yours. I am still waiting (Day 6) to have my logic board replaced. But, it sounds like there is definately a driver compatability issues going on also. Have you all raised cases with Apple? I doubt they have technicians reading the forums for issues, so if we want a fix then the best bet would be to force apple to take accountability and action of this issue. Perhaps reference this thread to them and ask them to escalate the issues to developers.

I scoured the web for a bit to try and find a solution, and then I came upon this suggestion, which seems to fix the issue for me:

"Somebody in Apple Support Communities > Notebooks > MacBook Air > Discussions (topic "No sound out after wake up in Mavericks") suggested to reload the audio kernel extension by running these commands in a shell:

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

This worked for me!"

Not the most elegant of solutions, but definitely better than having to reboot. Still wish that Apple would do something about this.

This worked for me as well. Thanks!

My teammate and I both have late 2013 MBPr models running 10.9.1 and have seen the OPs problem. We made 2 changes and so far have not had the problem return after a day. We went to SysPref => Energy Saver => Power Adapter and

  1. Checked "Prevent computer from sleeping when the display is off"
  2. Unchecked "Put hard disks to sleep when possible"

I'm having the same problem!

I purchased a Macbook Pro 13" with Retina Display about 2 weeks ago(29th Jan) .

When I listen to music or watch Youtube videos, I always plug in my apple earpiece ( the one that you get when you buy iPhones or iPods) . What happens usually is that when I put my laptop to sleep, audio doesn't work after I wake it up. Nothing can be heard through the earpiece or the built-in speaker.

I always resolve this problem by restarting my laptop. Today, I just feel like this can't go on forever so I google "macbook pro audio problems after sleeping" and I found this thread. Glad to know i'm not on my own! I wish Apple would do something about this.

Any suggestions on what else I could do other than restarting my laptop?

P.s: This is my first laptop. I also am more familiar with Windows. Actually, this is my first time handling an apple computer so i'm very new to all this

edit: like peterdalsgaard

suggested

Reloading the audio kext usually works.

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

There's a simple app that does it for you if you don't want to use the terminal.
