audio not working on retina macbook pro 13" (late 2013) after sleep

I have a brand new 13" retina macbook pro (late 2013) running OSX mavericks. The audio stops working after I wake the computer up from sleep.

Things I have already tried:

Putting it to sleep by closing the laptop, or by pressing the power button, or by using the menu option.

Using headphones, both before and after sleep, and plugging in and out afterwards.

Pressing mute or using the menu volume controls

Using the audio MIDI setup

Having programs open, specifically itunes or other AV programs. ie everything has been normal and I've tried it with everything closed.

Restarting the computer does fix the issue but only until I put it to sleep again.

I had this exact same problem and fixed it within 20 minutes.

First, open Finder. Press the 'Go' button at the top, then click on 'Go to Folder.'

From here type- /Library/Preferences/Audio and go

There should be 2 files in the audio folder. Move these to the trash.

Now you will have to complete a NVRAM reset. This will not affect any files or changes you have made to your computer. The reset will require you to shut down your computer.

NVRAM RESET:

1.) Shut down your laptop

2.) Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P and R. You will need to hold these down simultaneously in Step 4.

3.) Turn on the computer

4.) Press and hold the Comman-Option-P-R keys before the screen lights up

5.) Hold the buttons down until the computer restarts or makes the start up sound for the 2nd time

6.) Release the keys

Log back into your laptop, and try the sound. Hopefully it now works!

Hi all, I had the same issue with my Macbook Pro 13" Retina and just found the issue.

The problem was linked to an external audio software named Boom, which is meant to boost and enhance sound quality and volume. It is a software that has caused me nothing but problems since installing it. Once I got rid of Boom (or even turned it off) my audio was working perfectly.

For anyone still having trouble with this issue, spotlight search (cmnd + space bar) for Audio MIDI Setup, and make sure on the left hand side of this window that the built-in output is being used for sound output, not HDMi or any other audio output device.

Hope this helps some people!

Same problem here … but absolutely successful with that:

http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/55243/the-headphone-jack-on-my-macbook- pro-just-stopped-working-how-do-i-fix-it

1. Go to System Preferences > Sound > Output.
2. Plug your headphones in if you haven't yet.
3. Look at the bottom where it says Output Volume and un-check the mute button.

🙂

(Apparently the options in System Preferences are coupled to used devices)
