mavericks cursor disappears

Since installing Mavericks my cursor seems to randomly disappear. If I switch applications and return to the one that lost the cursor, the cursor reappears. I can't seem to identify any commonality to the occurences.

Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas or suggestions?

iMac, PowerMac and Powerbook, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

I had the same problem since upgrading to Mavericks. I would be typing in any open app, and within 10 seconds, the cursor would disappear, or the app would no longer be the active app and would prevent me from typing until I clicked on that app. I would be able to type for no more than 10 seconds until the issue came up again and prevented me from typing.

Don't ask me how or why it worked, but I went to Preferences, Energy Savers, and changed both the setting to a little over 15 min. Now all is working as normal. Hope this solves your issue.

Unfortunately, I'm back having the same problem today. I tried changing my energy savers, no such luck today....

Although the cursor disappears, it's because the open app becomes inactive, so I have to tap once on my magic pad to reactivate the app. When I tap once to reactivate the app, the cursor is back where it was and I can type for 10 seconds or less.

Perhaps it's an issue with bluetooth and the magic pad??? Drives my crazy, nonetheless.....

Good luck..

Sounds like your cursor disappears more frequently than mine. It has not re-disappeared since I made the change you described, but then my cursor was going AWOL only a few times a day.

BTW, I do not have separate touchpad, but do have a Magic Mouse on Bluetooth. I am on a late-2012 Retina MacBook Pro with integrated touchpad. When my cursor disappears neither mouse nor touchpad input will make it visible, though input from either will move the cursor position on the screen while it is unseen. The only way I have found to make it visible again is to use the keyboard (Command-Tab) to switch applications, at which point Isee the cursor again.

So since your change, I have not noticed the problem . . . but that's less than 24 hours. Will re-post if I do.

I've experienced the disapperaing cursor a few times. It will just disappear, but after a short time will reappear again. It is usually when I am working in InDesign, but it may just be coincidental, as I use that 90% of the time.

I am not using a magic mouse, I use a Wacom Bamboo tablet. My energy saver is set to Never, so it's obviously not anything to do with that.

This may be a Mavericks bug as it does appear to be a bit twitchy. I've found that font selection is also very slow in InDesign since upgrading to Mavericks.

Hope they release a bug fix upgrade soon.

Have any of you considered comparing installed software?

Anything that is old & running at the system level could interfere with the entire OS.

It strikes me that you should all compare EtreCheck reports & look for old software that needs updating.

If you have something in common it may be worth removing or updating.

There is a simple test to see if old software from 3rd parties might be the issue. Boot into 'Safe mode' (hold shift after the chime until the spinning 'cog' appears). Ensure the login window says 'safe mode'.

https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

It will disable all third party extensions & startup items.

If the Mac is better in safe mode it is time to get a system report. Be aware that some features will be disabled like wifi on some models - this is normal in safe mode. Test as much possible see if the behaviour appears.

Reboot to go back to normal.

Use EtreCheck to see what is running & post it here.

Drew, Thanks for the suggestion. I will post my Etresoft report below. But I will add that this problem has not occurred on my maching now in almost two weeks. I changed the Energy Saver Preferences as rplows99 suggested about that time, but I also booted Safe, rebooted with clear SMC and rebooted again clearing PRAM. So I can't be sure what helped. But as of now, no reoccurences since Oct 31.

Here is the Etresoft report for my machine. Also, I do not use Firefox or InDesign, though FireFox is installed on my machine. I use a Magic Mouse and my built in touchpad.

I'm having the same issues with my new iMac 27" (3.5ghz i7, 16gb ram & GeForce GTX 4096mb + fusion 1tb)

It often disappears, and every time you have a reason to type. You basically have to enter mission control, or command tab out of the app your using and back in.

It's really frustrating for me with photoshop, lightroom & premiere. It hasn't happened with Safari just yet, or maybe I haven't noticed it in Safari. It is extra annoying when in full-screen mode with any app.

Apple, let me test everything you make before you launch. I'll have nearly all the problems discovered in a day. How hard is it to test basic every-day uses?

I just did a clean install of Mavericks last night and have only added Firefox, Dropbox & Evernote, so far. The cursor jumping off the page started before I installed anything. As I am moving my mouse (I have both hard wired and magic mouse connected as I have for over a year with Snow Leopard) I see the cursor suddenly fly off the side or down to the bottom of my page and have to wait a few seconds before clicking to get it back. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I also notice that the mouse works backwards to what most do and from what it did before Mavericks. When I want to scroll up, I have to move the button or my finger down, and the reverse for down. Feels very strange.

EtreCheck won't help you with a clean install, sorry.

You already said the default installation had the issue, is that right?

Did you test inside a Mac app or did you instantly install Firefox & completely void the test?

It could be one of the following…

Crap over the mouse sensor, clean it - tiny hairs can make it go weird.

Using the Mouse on a surface that is too shiny, try another mousemat.

Batteries depleted in mouse.

A dying mouse.

You will need to try another mouse to rule out a lot of the above, or try your mouse on another Mac.

It could also be that 10.9 is broken, but I'd have expected a lot more reports by now.

It could still be a conflict with Dropbox or Firefox or Evernote. You need to test before installing more apps, otherwise it's just unclear where the issue lies.

P.S.

Reversed scrolling is normal, Open System Preferences > Mouse and deselect 'natural scrolling' (it man be labeled something else).
