Anyone getting graphics corruption in OSX Mavericks?

Has anyone who tried Pehtis' fix from January, "undone" the fix by re-enabling compressed memory? What were the results?

I think i have a possible solution to this problem.

To fix it you have to disable compressed memory by typing the following command in the terminal:

sudo nvram boot-args="vm_compressor=1"

and then Restarting your Mac.

I'm guessing that its a bug in the driver of the Intel HD Graphics integrated GPU used in the 2010 MacBook Pro and somehow a part of the graphics RAM is accidentally compressed. I've been testing for approx. 8 hours and so far no graphics corruption at all.

If it gets fixed in an OSX update or it doesn't work for you you can use:

sudo nvram -d boot-args

to reenable compressed memory.

It might affect other Intel GPUs so its worth a shot if you have a similar problem.

I, too, would like to know if 10.9.2, at long last, fixes the problem so that Pehtis's work-around is no longer necessary. I, currently, have memory compression disabled. I won't have time to upgrade until next week. Until then, I look forward to seeing the feedback.

the weird thing for me – when I updated to 10.9.1 patch, a few weeks back, the problem almost disappeared totally - I still was getting the odd ghosting artifact on a small portion of an open window (with AGS enabled), but nothing as bad as with the 10.9 release...

.... I'm just wondering whether the upgrading from Snow Leopard and a buggy 10.9 installer has something to do with it as well as the graphics driver issue ...

Yes, I tried undoing the Pehtis Fix and immediately got the corruption back. That has not been the case with either the graphics switching "fix" or 10.9.2 so far, and I'm guessing it's gone for good.

Hi rbdancer - Can you please clarify what you said? Do you mean that the corruption returned when you changed graphics switching or un-did Pehtis' fix before you went to 10.9.2, but not after?

Yes, I do mean that (so far) the problem has been absent with 10.9.2. I did not care for the earlier fix because it was undoing what Mavericks was supposed to do. No issues at all since update, 24 hours-plus ago. Thanks!

Hi, I installed the update 10.9.2. Since then no problems anymore....finally... working is fun again.

But, who is give me my money back for a diagnostic at the apple premium service?

Outstanding! Installing it this morning. I'm sure that "they" will hear from all of us if it's less than a fix! For what it's worth, I'm un-doing Pehtis' suggested fix before installing.

It was update time anyway and I went out and bought a new 13" MBP to replace my mid 2010 one about which I have been complaining in this discussion since Mavericks upgrade.

AMAZING difference! Like a coal taken out of a fire I hadn't realised how SLOW and painful my user expereince had become. Death by a thousand cuts.

So this is what a Mac + Mavericks is meant to feel like!!!

So speedy. iPhoto opens in seconds with 20,000 pics etc etc.

Come on Apple - it shouldn't cost users thousands to overcome this problem with mid 2010 MBPs.

Same here. It works. But performance has taken a big hit. Lots of hesitation opening Finder windows, new documents in MS Word, etc. At first I thought it was my cloud backup, which is always running in the background, but I turned the backup off, and still getting lots of lag. Anyone else?

Just as Thomas Wolfe said "You can't go home again," we can't down-rev back to 10.8 (without drastic measures).

Mr Grover (above) found another good work-around, but there's no Retina MB Pro with a DVD drive built in, plus a new machine is out of reach financially at the moment. I know, never satisfied...

I'm on a mbp mid-2010, had black screens etc and switched to ssd, added more memory and updated to 10.9.2. Everything was super fast and smooth for a couple of days, then just now when I was doing some scanning, the computer shut down again. Anyone else gotten their problems back?

I also have the Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro and have been experiencing the graphics glitches since switching to Mavericks.

I have been to the Apple Store about four times in the last month:

1) We addressed possible hardware issues, replacing my logic board, all of my RAM, the bottom shell of my computer since the shell was dented, and the battery since that was also kind of failing. I restored from a backup, and 24 hours later, the issue returned.

2) We addressed more possible hardware fixes, replacing my logic board again as well as my display. I restored from a backup, and 24 hours later, the issue returned.

3) This time we decided to take a software approach. We cleared my Mac and did another clean install of Mavericks, and instead of doing a backup, individually redownloaded my applications from the app store and the Microsoft website for my Office apps. We also dragged over my music and libraries and documents. The problem came back in less than 24 hours this time.

4) I went back yesterday, and they decided to "partition" my laptop or something. Now I have two operating systems on my laptop that I switch between so I can use my iCloud with Pages for my papers and stuff. They wanted to see if the problems would recurr in Mountain Lion, so that is what I have been trying since last night.

The guy I had last night said that version 10.9.2 of Mavericks would come out soon but that he didn't think it was set to address any graphical issues. I'm pretty sure the issue will not occur in Mointain Lion since the problem started when I downloaded Mavericks. Mountain Lion seems a lot slower so far, and I don't really want to have to restart my computer all the time to switch operating systems, but it is what it is. We will see what happens.

I found that the slowdown for me happened at the very first Mavericks install, and it has never gone away. I don't notice any additional slowing now that I've installed the 10.9.2 update.

In the days since I did that, I have had the computer on sleep many times, used quite a few graphics-heavy apps, and done only a couple of restarts. In that time I have not experienced any kind of graphics corruption that was cropping up for all of us earlier.

Stephamonkey, too bad you didn't see this thread earlier. One of the participants had a workaround that worked (see above for Pehtis). Most of us on this thread have had motherboard replacements, and the Apple technicians recommended many of the things you listed out.

Go to 10.9.2, it will address the issue. PS - the lagginess that I reported yesterday is gone. Back to normal. Maybe Mav 10.9.2 was doing something in the background when it was first installed. But OK now.

If you decide not to update to 10.9.2, implement Pehtis' fix - works fine, no risk.
